The Bull Jumping Ceremony!!

An impressive display of courage, skill, and athleticism, the bull jumping ceremony is a centuries rite of passage for young men in Hamer tradition. The Hamer are a tribal community living in the lower omo valley of Ethiopia.
On the day of the ceremony, there is plenty of celebrating. Women dance in traditional dress - playing horns with their legs draped in bells - drinking home-brewed sorghum beer. Depending on the social status of the family, somewhere between 100 and 300 people are likely to attend.

Before the ceremony, the female relatives (with the exception of little girls) of the young man go to meet the Maza, men who have just passed the bull-jumping ceremony and who temporarily live apart from tge rest of the tribe.
They demand to be whipped by these men as a way of showing their dedication and loyalty towards their male relatives. The idea here is to create a strong bond - an obligation - between them.
As they have undergone such pain so stoically on his behalf, he should feel a debt to protect them going into the future. This also signals their attractiveness as a future wife, and it becomes a kind of competition, with women refusing to back down and vowing to each endure the most pain.

Before the ceremony, the young man is rubbed with sand as a purification ritual, is smeared with dung to deliver him strength, and has his head partly shaved and his face painted. He also has strips of tree bark wrapped around his body, as a form of spiritual protection.
Seven to ten castrated bulls are lined up in a row by the men of the tribe and smeared with dung in order to make them slippery. In the midst of an electric atmosphere and a cacophony of bells and horns, the man must leap up onto, and run over, the several-deep row of cattle 4 times without falling.

Appearance is extremely important to the Hamar People, having spectacular hairstyles, for both men and women, and grooming ones hair is essential to the hamer's sense of beauty. Women paint their hair with red ochre and then twist them into dreads, while often ostrich feathers and other ornaments are attached.

The custom of wearing a lip plate is linked to the female's fertility and eligibility for marriage. When a Mursi girl reaches puberty (around age 15 to 16) she will have her lip cut by a female member of the tribe and a small wooden or clay is inserted below the lower lip.

Once the lip has been stretched to the desired satisfaction it does not hurt. When the girls begin puberty their mother usually starts the process by inserting a small wooden or clay lip plate inserted below the lower lip.

What is the purpose of lip plates?

There is no doubt that the men see it is a sign of beauty and the women with lip plates take great pride in this symbolic part of their culture and their identity. The lip plates can be made of wood or clay, but most often clay.

One of the most important cerimonial events in dassench tribe is Dimmi. The Dimmi ritual is a traditional associated with the blessing of the first born daughters. Dimmi is performed when the girl reaches the age of 8-10. Each clan has their own special site where they perform the ritual. Girls of the same age and clan are blessed together. Before the ritual begins, temporary huts are built. Goats and cattle will be brought to slaughter at the ceremony. The girls’ fathers are espected to be well decorated. The blessing is made by a group of elders known as buls. The main purpose of the blessing is to ensure the girls fertility in their future life.
