Lalibela is located in the northern central parts of Ethiopia and it’s among the first sixteen world heritage sites to be inscribed by UNESCO in 1978. The sites commonly described as the museum of churches, consists the eleven rock hewn churches believed to have been built some 900 hundred years ago during the reign of king Lalibela.

We would like to invite you trek with us from one highlander village to the other on the massif of Abune Yosef conservation area, experience the way life of the highlander farmers, take part on their daily activity, enjoy the magical mountain view, observe the wild life the massif has to offer, including: the iconic ethiopia Wolf, Gelada Baboon, mountain Leopard, many types of birds as well as the third highest peak in the country: the Abune Yoseph peak (4,284m).
Abune Yoseph is unique for the enormous landscape that offers impressive views over the Afralpine plateau as well as in to the Tekeza vally. The plateau itself boasts an unspoiled highland environment bursting with unique flora and fauna. Abune Yosphe is endowed with 43 species of mammal, including seven of the 32 Abyssinian endmics. Over a quarter of all of the birds found in Ethiopia can be seen in and around Abune Yoseph.
Located just a one and half day trek (one day if in peak condition) or a two hour drive and three hours trek from the medieval city of lalibela. Abune Yoseph is an idea destination in its own right as well as perfectly located to make a detour from lalibela.

Jan 7, 2019 Christmas in lalibela (Ethiopia )
You will explore the Historic Route of Ethiopia as well as experience Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas, a colorful and ancient celebration around the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.
This is one of the greatest and most colorful festivals on the Ethiopian calendar. At Lalibela, it is celebrated with greater devotion, chanting, dancing, and singing around the rock-hewn churches that were built more than 800 years ago. The ancient city of Lalibela will be filled with tens of thousands of pilgrims who come from all directions of Ethiopia and from all walks of life.
Most of the pilgrims reach Lalibela from far off hamlets and inaccessible valleys, walking on their bare feet for days, weeks, and even months to share the blessing on Christmas day. Although Ethiopian Christmas is on January 7, there will be different ceremonies held around the rock-hewn churches starting the night of January 4th. This is an ancient Christian tradition that has remained unchanged over the years. Witnessing this event, you feel like you are transported centuries back in time.

A popular goal for haif day-trip, the Asheton Maryam Monastery is one of the highest in Ethiopia, set at an elevation of almost 4000m to the southeast of Lalibela. Carved into a cliff face, it was most probably founded by Nakuta La’ab, who may also be buried there. The small and unadorned church harbors a few impressive crosses, illuminated manuscripts and other treasures, though arguably the most remarkable aspect of a visit to Asheton Maryam is its magnificent setting and the stunning views as you ascend.
