The Harenna forest is the second largest moist tropical forest in Ethiopia.

Home to many endemic species of flora and fauna, not least, the iconic black maned lion, it spills down the southern slopes of the Bale Mountains. The central part of the forest lies within the boundary of the Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) which is protected by The Ethiopian Wildlife Authority (EWCA), with support from FZS.Ethiopia.

Over the years, pressure on the forest for wood, forage and water has increased and the BMNP and FZS_Ethiopia are collaborating with the local communities to try and find alternative ways of finding the resources that they need, so that the integrity of the forest can be preserved.

These measures include a number of longstanding projects being run with communities in the buffer zone around the park, such as forage production and the introduction of fuel efficient stoves. These aim to reduce the pressure on the forest by providing alternative fodder for livestock and reducing the amount of wood needed for cooking.

To support these projects by minimising illegal activity in the forest, such as wood extraction or grazing in protected areas, a section office in Delo Mena has also been established to support rangers and outposts based in the southern part of the park.
