Hello from the founder of Day With A Local! When I returned back to Finland from my around the world trip 10 years ago, I wanted to create the best possible alternative for typical guided tours that I could – and so I did! 😁🤩 I wanted my guests to experience, taste and feel the city. I wanted to show the clean city that I loved. I wanted to share my enthusiasm. I gathered a group of Locals that wanted to share their love of the city they live in and we had a great time with our guests. Our team did all they could to create the best possible experience for our guests.

Years went by and I noticed that despite of my and my team’s effort to offer five star service, it is not possible in the Finnish ’tourist hostile’ environment where bureaucracy is more important than common sense, good service is a nice surprise, ’tourists wondering around block customers’ (as heard on Saturday) and the days of clean capital that to be proud of are behind.

The love has faded but is still there. As I will be hosting possibly my last guests this upcoming week, I will at least once more share ’the sounds of Helsinki’ - the sound of an old and a new tram, the ’taste of Finland’, the local lifestyle as well as the city highlights. Maybe for the last time? Only time will show that…

Finland 🇫🇮 just won Olympic Gold 🥇 in ice hockey and most importantly, against Russia 😁😁 One of my (Liisa’s) favorite stories to tell at Havis Amanda statue in the heart of Helsinki is this ”torille” moment – meaning Finns gathering together around her when Finland wins Gold in ice hockey. Luckily it’s Sunday so it will take time before officials are there ruining the joyous moment 😃, our precious mermaid hasn’t been protected with fences yet and there will be a huge party! 🥳🥳

As restrictions will get worse next week and restaurants will close at 6 pm (and many will keep their doors completely shut), a couple of reminders without any promotional purposes.

Day With A Local Helsinki wishes Happy Holidays! At the same time we want to express our sympathy for restaurants, events, travel companies and all other affected by the current situation.
Please note that major restrictions will take place in Finland, especially in Helsinki region and also on many other regions, from 28th December onwards. Alcohol will not be served in any restaurants or bars after 5 pm. Restaurants must close early and therefore many restaurants will not be open at all during the upcoming weeks. Events are cancelled or rescheduled. Saunas, spas and gyms in Helsinki region must close at least for 2 weeks. Museums, libraries, churches etc will remain open at this knowledge without offering any tours or other events.

Health measures due to Covid19 pandemic:
- our Locals are fully vaccinated and we serve only fully vaccinated guests
- we avoid any physical contact such as handshake or a hug and greet at a distance
- our guests can choose if our Local wears a mask at all times

Less snow this year, but that is why there is a magnificent natural ice rink on Kilpisjärvi-See on the Top of Finland.
Finland is a great winter sports country, although there has been little snow in the Helsinki metropolitan area in recent years. However, snow-covered trails have already been opened and several ice rinks are in use in Helsinki and surroundings.

They have, without exception, reassured him that Covid-19-related travel restrictions do not apply to flying reindeer, if those reindeer are pulling a sleigh full of presents.

Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium – designed in the 1930s for the Olympic games in 1940 - which did not take place because of the war - and host of the 1952 summer games – has now been given an impressive new makeover and also many new facilities for competitors, spectators and media inside the stadium and a brand new running track which meets the highest international standards for athletics events.
The renovated stadium will not be used only for sport events. Helsinki Design Week will this year run as a hybrid digital and physical format from 3rd – 13th September and its main exhibition programme will be hosted from the newly renovated Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
You are warmly welcome to visit Helsinki and its Olympic Stadium as soon as the travel restrictions allow free travelling again.
