What a great tour this was. A Finn who migrated to USA from Finland in 1985 brings his family to visit Helsinki. We had fun in an easy-going private walking tour visiting various landmarks and talking about Finnish history as the group had wonderful questions.

Summer is in full swing, beautiful scenes from all around Helsinki 🌞🌞 Tours are booked out for June, few spots left for July; busy days ahead. This high season in Helsinki makes us to think about sustainable and responsible tourism more than ever. This year in March, Ataman Tours received its sustainability certificate and it is a certified sustainable business. All tours designed and conducted by Ataman Tours are in accordance with Visit Finland and City of Helsinki’s sustainability standards. There is more work to be done. And now, all advertisements are completely paperless and online, no more brochures or flyers. The only paper products used are business cards which are 100% recycled paper and they are from local suppliers.
I can see many other small businesses in Helsinki getting inspired by my tour descriptions, designs and ideas on different platforms; makes me proud 😊. Such a fun private architecture tour with Allana and her family from New Zealand. Visited great landmarks in Helsinki city centre and finished the tour in Central Library Oodi, although Rikhardinkatu Library was also on the cards, but we can only visit so many libraries on one tour :) Well, there's always the next time...

Time for the annual Vanhankaupunginkoski post! (But this time Faith No More was playing in my head so I added one of their underappreciated songs in the background). This is the area Vanhakaupunki where Helsinki was established in 1550, 7 km to the north of the Senate Square, where the Vantaa River meets the sea. Helsinki was moved to its new location in Kruununhaka in 1640 when the Governor General Per Brahe was in charge. Spring has arrived! And all the snow melted so these days you can see the powerful stream of Vantaa River. If you're into rafting or kayaking there are nice routes on the river. For example, for rafting from Pitkäkoski to Haltiala farm, around 5 km. Areas around the river provide great biking routes and you can also swim in the river in many locations if you don't mind the cold waters. What I do

My name is Emek Ataman. I am a city planner with a master's degree in Urban Policy Studies; I am continuing my PhD studies in Urban Studies/Social Policy program in the University of Helsinki. I wanted to combine my love for Helsinki with my knowledge and research about the history, planning and culture of the city, and share it with a wider audience, so I became a professional tour guide! I do small group walking tours; history, culture, architecture and nature.

Even in the well-known locations, there are always hidden stories; devil is in the details! My stories and anecdotes will make the locations we visit come alive. You will slowly start understanding how the locals think-walk-talk and why? We will walk in and around Helsinki city center and see both the main attractions and the lesser known but historically and culturally important parts and locations. These tours will show you Helsinki city life from a local perspective.
