The beginning of the year is the time for blinis ❤ From January to March, many restaurants in Helsinki serve these delicious, originally Slavic style buttery delicacies in their menus! ❄

The Finnish version is usually made of buckwheat flour, baked in a cast-iron pan until crisp and served with a variety of different toppings, usually salmon roe, sour cream and onion.

We Helsinkians devour books and visit libraries often ❤️ 📚

And here’s more proof: Helsinki’s public libraries have set a new visitor record in 2024 – more people than ever visited Helsinki’s libraries last year! 🤩

✨ Libraries saw 9.2 million visitors last year, which was an all-time high since the city began keeping records, and 13 percent more than in 2023.

✨ People borrowed an average of 5.7 books and other materials from the city’s libraries in 2024, reflecting a seven percent increase over the previous year.

✨ The most popular libraries last year in terms of number of borrowed books were #1 Central Library Oodi, #2 Vuosaari Library and #3 Töölö Library.

One of the classic views of Helsinki are the massive ice breakers, docked by the Katajanokka district outside winter season! ❄️⛴

Each winter after the Baltic Sea freezes over, the ice breakers depart for their icebreaking duties to keep the ports and important sea lanes open.

The Katajanokka peninsula next to the Market Square is home to six giant icebreakers. In wintertime they are busy clearing the shipping lanes, but in summertime especially they can be admired up close from the Merikasarmi Quay. Sometimes the winters are so mild that at least some of the icebreakers....

Did you know Finns drink the most coffee in the world with an average of just over 12 kg of coffee per year, per person? 🤩☕️🏆

Maybe this isn’t so surprising since coffee is traditionally a hot beverage and warming up during the long, northern winter months is a lot easier with a nice cup of coffee in hand. ❤️

On the other hand, it is generally the happiest countries in the world (according to the World Happiness Report) that also drink the most coffee.. Coincidence?

Whatever the reason, we do love our daily cups of java, and Helsinki naturally has a whole host of high-quality cafes where ambitious baristas prepare perfect espressos, cappuccinos, pour overs, and aeropress coffees. ✨

HAM Helsinki Art Museum’s major exhibition takes an in-depth look at public paintings of Finnish author, artist and the creator of the beloved Moomins, Tove Jansson, through which she shared joy, beauty and windows into the magical world of storytelling! 🌌🎨

Filling half of HAM’s exhibition space on two floors, the exhibition presents over 180 artworks and other exhibits, along with a notable collection of previously unexhibited sketches.

ℹ️ The exhibition celebrates 80 years of the Moomins, as this year marks the 80th anniversry of the publication of Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen (The Moomins and the Great Flood). 🎉

⛸️ Ice skating is a fun winter outdoor activity you can enjoy at several ice skating rinks throughout the city. Close to the city center, you can lace up your skates for instance on Brahe Ice Rink in Kallio and Johanneksen Kenttä in Ullanlinna.

⛷️ Each winter Helsinki is also transformed into a real cross-country skiing destination. In winters when there is lots of snow, Helsinki can offer up to 200 kilometres of groomed trails which can take you from Central Park to almost every part of the city. Paloheinä is a classic cross-country ski centre that offers a wide range of trails that are suitable for skiers of all levels.

🏊 Up for a refreshing dip in the icy water? Winter swimming is an experience that leaves you feeling just fantastic and refreshed. In winter Helsinki, there's nothing quite like an energizing dip in the Baltic Sea after a toasty warm sauna!

Lux Helsinki takes over the city again for 5 days starting today! ✨🤩

Lux Helsinki is an annually organised light art festival that transforms familiar buildings and spaces into unique works of urban art during the darkest time of the year.

Lux Helsinki 2025 takes place across the city. The largest collection of works will be displayed in the city center and Kaivopuisto areas, featuring 13 works. The light art exhibition Lux In and two artworks will be showcased at Cable Factory. Additionally, two Lux Helsinki works can be experienced at Kanneltalo, one at the Mall of Tripla shopping center, and one in Tapionpuisto, Espoo. 💡💡💡

Several cafés, restaurants and bars near the artworks will also be open during the festival – what better way to enjoy Lux Helsinki than by pairing light art with a warm drink or plateful of comfort food! ❤️☕
