Indium is all about the thrill of the training run! We believe in a careful approach to sled dog training. Our dogs start working with guests at 2 years old, but before that, they spend a season learning under professional drivers in guide sleds. This method helps them build confidence and skills for a safe, successful transition to a professional sled dog.

Training our huskies on swamp terrain offers a unique challenge compared to regular trails and roads. The swamp simulates deep snow conditions, requiring the dogs to pull harder and work together as a team to navigate the heavy, uneven ground. The mud and water also help to keep them cool during the workout, making it both physically demanding and beneficial for their endurance and strength. This type of training is an excellent way to prepare them for winter sledding conditions.

Keeping the dogs properly hydrated is a crucial part of the training. Working out increases fluid loss for all athletes – dogs as well as humans. But like we humans do, dogs don't sweat while working out. They cool off and control their body temperature by panting. It is their primary mechanism for regulating body temperature. When a dog pants, they rapidly exchange warm air from their lungs with cooler air from the environment. This process helps to dissipate excess heat, making it the primary way dogs regulate their body temperature.

At the age of one, our dogs start to train with the adults, but with less intensity. They already know how to work in a team but aren’t physically yet ready to do the same amount of work as adults. We work with them in the summer to reinforce good routines, building their confidence and physical condition. We are proud to see them develop.

Resting between training runs is important because it optimizes our athletes’ performance and recovery time. It allows the dogs to lower their heart rate, replenish energy stores, and ensure their muscles are prepared for the next round. By incorporating rest between rounds our dogs can maintain the intensity of pulling a cart or a sled, and reduce the risk of injury or fatigue keeping in mind that the breaks need to have a good balance between calming the heart rate and not cooling down the muscles too much otherwise it will increase the risks for muscle injuries.

Meet our Mountain puppies Tengri, Tabor, Kazbek, and our only male, K2. We got these puppies from with whom we shared this litter.

Their parents are Nyla and Sailor. Sailor comes from Mats Pettersson and has participated in the Iditarod, Tobaccotrail, Lapland Quest, and Gold Rush Run as part of his team. As a personality Sailor is more selective towards people he's interested in and always wants to run.

Nyla has never participated in competitions, but as a sleddog, she always does her part and works as one of the best lead dogs on her owner Jake's team. A rare part of Nyla's character is her ability to communicate with other dogs which can be seen in her puppies.

Nyla and Sailor have one previous litter from two years ago. Those siblings are good leaders and very social towards other dogs and people. These characteristics can already be seen in these pups as well, our Mountain pups are very social and not afraid to explore the world around them.

In a pack, the older dogs often correct the younger ones when they misbehave, teaching them vital information in a natural way.

We utilize this behavior in our own training and often pair young dogs with more experienced individuals. When they are running, the experienced dogs can correct and teach the youngsters immediately, making it easier to learn the right ways of working as a member of the team and giving them a four-legged role model to look up to.

Tried to get to participate in this process but we did it ourselves with and had a blast while doing something good for the environment.

Small waterbodies have suffered significant damage in the Lapland region due to drainage, dredging, forest management and migration barriers such as road culverts. The diversity of the riverbeds has diminished and the deep areas needed by larger fish have filled up. A lot of material, not part of the aquatic ecosystem, such as tree leaves, plant matter and substances carried by runoff from surrounding areas accumulates in the riverbeds. As a result, there is an abundance of breakers in the bottom-dwelling community, contributing to a natural balance maintained by water flow.

The purpose of this project is to improve the habitat in Viiksoja to restore the trout population and return the stream to its natural state, as well as maintain it. Another goal, is to remove migration barriers that block the migration of fish.

This project is a part of the HELMI Small Waterbodies initiative, managed by the Finnish Water Foundation, which aims to restore, plan and invest in small waterbodies across Finland. The restoration of Viiksoja began in the fall of 2023, when the restoration plan was presented to the landowners and local residents.

Viiksoja originates from Lake Viiksjärvi, which is classified as having excellent ecological status. Viiksoja was used as a timber floating route more than 100 years ago, and before that, it was dredged by hand, with the largest stones moved to the edges of the ditch and the sharper bends straightened to create as straight a path as possible.

Our goal was to restore the riverbed by using the stones along the banks to stone-line the channel and create threshold structures, in front of which we made a flow deepening/pool. Larger stones in the faster-flowing rapids provide shelter for the fish and help form protective ice cover in the rapids. We built the threshold structures by digging up stones from the riverbed and placing them at the lower part of the pool or reinforcing existing natural threshold structures by moving stones in the riverbed to better locations.

Around our kennel, we have a variety of training trails that offer different terrains for our huskies to navigate - forest trails with uphills to train muscles and power, dirt roads for long-distance training, allowing our huskies to develop endurance and swampy trails to build strength and muscle. By exposing them to different challenges during training, we ensure they are well-prepared for the winter season ahead.

After the training run, Diablo is still raring to go! Working dogs are driven by a deep-seated passion for the tasks they were bred for. Whether it's the Alaskan Husky's relentless love for running, the Border Collie's instinctual herding prowess or the Golden Retrievers' passion for retrieving balls, these amazing dogs demonstrate remarkable dedication in their work.
