Do you know the Finnish legend of the Northern Lights? We will tell you about it…
But first, did you know that the Finnish word for the Northern Lights is “revontuli”, which translates to “fox fire”? In Finnish, “revo” is a word linked to the fox 🦊 in a mythological context and “tuli” means “fire” 🔥.

“Once upon a time, during the long polar nights, an assembly of forest animals gathered. The reindeer 🦌, the bear 🐻, the moose 🫎, and even the little mouse 🐭 were desperately looking for a way to light up their dark world. But it wasn't that simple. The big animals didn't pay attention to the ideas of the smaller ones. Yet one cunning fox refused to give up. As the days went by, his voice was more and more muffled by the debates of the strongest. Tired and frustrated, the fox ends up leaving the group. As it ran through the snow, it whipped the ground with its tail. And there, as if by magic, the snowflakes he lifted into the sky transformed into magnificent dancing lights. This is how, according to legend, the fox created the Northern Lights, bringing light and wonder to the darkest nights. »

And you, have you ever seen the lights of this famous fox?

Discover the New Year traditions in Finnish Lapland!

1. The tradition of molten tin
It is an ancient custom practiced throughout Finland. Local families melt a small tin object, usually in the shape of a horseshoe, and pour the liquid metal into cold water. The resulting shapes are then interpreted to predict luck, love, or events in the coming year.

2. New Year's Sauna
The locals do a sauna to purify themselves and symbolically prepare to welcome the new year. 🙂

3. Fireworks and bonfires 🎆
In Finland, in villages and small communities, fireworks or bonfires are organized. It is a time of gathering for families and friends, who come to share hot drinks, such as glögi (spiced mulled wine) and cakes.

🎉 How would you like to celebrate the New Year in Lapland?

Discover the traditional sweets of Finland

A trip to Finland would not be complete without tasting these typical desserts. Let yourself be tempted by these two must-haves that will delight your taste buds! 🍴

🫐 Blueberry pie (mustikkapiirakka)
In summer, Finnish forests are overflowing with delicious wild blueberries. These sweet little berries are the perfect base for a soft and flavorful pie. Tradition? Enjoy it warm, accompanied by a glass of fresh milk. A true concentrate of Nordic flavors reminiscent of long summer days under the Finnish sun.

🍞 Korvapuusti
These cinnamon buns are the most delicious you can find. They are distinguished by their twisted shape and their generous cinnamon and sugar filling. Unlike their Swedish cousins (kanelbullar), Korvapuusti often have a touch of cardamom, added to the paste for an even richer and more typical aroma. They are perfect for warming up on long winter days!

Which of these pastries tempt you the most? Tell us in the comments!

Discover the magic of Finnish Christmas ✨

🎄 A simple and warm Christmas
In Finland, Christmas is much more than a time dedicated to Santa Claus and presents. It is a celebration of sharing, enjoying glögi (mulled wine with spices), enjoying an invigorating sauna and decorating homes with ice lanterns or natural wreaths. At Christmas, one of the most beloved family traditions is decorating gingerbread cookies, which are often hung on a branch of the Christmas tree placed in the house.

🍽️ A traditional feast
Finnish tables come alive with roasted ham with mustard, an assortment of fish, root vegetable gratins and the essential sweets: spiced cookies, plum jam tarts and maustekakku (spiced cake).

🎅 Unique traditions
Some families gather in snowy chalets, illuminated by homemade lanterns, to sing and share friendly moments. In the evening, after the sauna, Santa Claus (Joulupukki) comes in person to bring gifts to the children.

The Northern Lights: a spectacle straight from the sun!

Did you know that the Northern Lights are caused by solar flares? ☀️
The Sun emits solar winds which are composed of electrically charged particles (protons, electrons, etc.). When solar winds are powerful, they can come into contact with the Earth.
Our Earth is protected from solar winds thanks to its magnetic field. However, this protection is less at the north and south poles. When a solar flare is emitted, some particles can therefore enter the atmosphere.

This is where all the magic happens!
Particles from the solar wind collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere. Thus releasing photons, that is to say light. These light rays can take on different colors: green, purple, red, yellow, blue and white: it all depends on the atoms and their altitude.

Result ? A unique light show in the sky. Have you ever had the chance to observe one?

Although the winter season is already well underway, the climatic situation was a bit unusual at the start of the season. Indeed, the snow was long overdue, as well as the opening of the forest trails. Fortunately, the cold was there and allowed us to offer snowmobile tours on the ice🏍️❄️

From 10 cm of ice thickness, it is possible to walk, skate, cross-country ski or fish. 20 to 25 cm are necessary to travel there on a snowmobile.

Our team is therefore responsible for checking and measuring the thickness of the ice regularly on the circuits taken for our excursions. At the start of the season, we also check the structure of the ice before it is covered with snow. This step is essential to understand the terrain on which we are operating, before it is covered with snow and less easy to interpret. In a very short time, a thick layer of ice formed on the Ounasjoki River in Rovaniemi. The latest measurements indicate more than 30 cm of ice, so rest assured if you take a snowmobile excursion with us! ☺️

Did you know? The city of Rovaniemi was built in the shape of a reindeer 🦌

During the Second World War, nearly 90% of the buildings in the city centre were destroyed in 1944. The reconstruction was then put in place and it was Alvar Aalto who was chosen to rethink the city. Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was one of the country's greatest architects. He re-imagined the city with the most emblematic animal of the region: the reindeer.

December 6: Independence Day in Finland

Independence Day is a highlight in Finland. It is an opportunity to honor all those who gave their lives for the freedom of the country, especially during the Winter and Continuation Wars.

On this day (public holiday), Finnish flags are raised, speeches are given and choirs sing. During the evening, many watch the presidential reception on television, an unmissable tradition! Some light candles on their windows or participate in parades carrying torches to pay tribute to the fallen heroes of the Second World War.
A moment of respect, memories and sharing.

For the more curious, you can follow the Independence Day celebration on Rovaniemi's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/cityofrovaniemi

Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää (Happy Independence Day)
