Northern Lights at Ahvenlampi, Luosto
Where to go in order to see the Northern Lights at Luosto? If you are not in the mood of climbing up to the Ukko-Luosto Scenic hut (200m height difference), the easy reachable option is AHVENLAMPI lake, 5 minutes walk from central Luosto. View like this is not every night, but be patient, if you stay for one week, there is a fair chance of starry nights. These images are from October, 2023.
Did you wake up early this morning, wondering why? Well, it was the beautiful Aurora outdside, not at the magnetic midnight, but at sunrise time. This is the corona at 6 am at Sodankylä. Note the sound, freezing river Kitinen has a thin ice cover, forming cracks and sounding like bending a large metal plate.

Didn't you stay outside awake last night, perhaps missing the activation of aurora and pulsating aurora throughout the night? Pay attention to the fast pulsating patches in the left corner of the images with the house. These are south of the flaming main arc of aurora. Camera then turns straight up to show more details. These pulsating patches sometimes cover the whole sky, they are not too bright, but magic in appearance, while being so fast.
Aurora House, Sodankylä: 23 March 2018
Last night was again fabulous! This is at Aurora House slightly before midnight on 23 March 2018, looking straight up. And the clear sky condition should continue at the moment. It might be partially overcast early in the evening, but just wait...the lights will come tonight, too.

Did you miss the aurora during last weekend or early this week? Next time, be prepared to wait long in advance, have some warm clothes and stay outdoors (and awake...) through the night. This is how it looked like at Sodankylä late Sunday evening. Note the quiet arc in the south in the beginning. It challenges you to wait longer, despite of the simultaneous active arcs in the north. They are just a prelude to what will come later from the south :-)

?(Just go out and have a look now) This peaceful view of several parallel arcs was there on Monday in the evening. Looking north, Sodankylä at Kurkiaapa.
Blue Saana mountain
Finland celebrated today 100 years as an independent country. Earlier this week, one of the most spectacular mountains of Finland, Saana, was lit as an environmental piece of art. In fact, this was the largest illuminated natural object so far in the whole world. We witnessed the scene - with Northern Lights and the super moon.

Again we do have fantastic aurora tonight - above the clouds! Pity, it is overcast so we can only see them with instruments. For those of us who desperately watched the clouds during last nights, here is a short video on a special form just after sunset last October - on blue sky!
This is how the Aurora look like at the local Ski and recreational Centre, Luosto, which is 28 km south of the Aurora House by snowmobile. This is a nice time of the year for aurora, because the nights are long and dark. Even weaker auroral events appear intensive to our eyes.
Aurora 2016/10/01-02
Weather forecast is for cloudless clear nights. This is how it looks like during early morning hours during any of these coming nights, with pulsating and flickering aurora. In addition you might see those really active and bright forms in the late evening. Stay tuned for the aurora winter!
Aurora season winter 2015-2016 at Sodankyla is more or less over, since the nights are now very, very short before summer (with no night...). Here is the last corona with bright moonlight on 14-15 April 2016. Enjoy!
Aurora 2 April 2016
Just now we have dynamic aurora again - but above the clouds. It was raining the whole day. Some compensation here for all enthusiasts, a short video clip of the aurora of last weekend.
Aurora and Moon
Here is a short movie of the previous still photo, with bright moon and aurora. The people watching are jumping excited around, stepping every now and then in the camera field of view.
Early evening aurora in the north
Early evening aurora in the north, you should not go in when you notice something like this in the horizon after sunset. Later in the night it may suddenly fill the whole sky.
What a night it was last night. Yesterdays most beautiful shape of aurora, the corona, changed in one minute into the second most beautiful form, the pulsating aurora. Here is how. Enjoy!
AuroraHouse Sodankyla 20-21 Jan 2016
It is still snowing, so let's go back once more to last week's cold and clear nights. We enjoyed bright aurora and moonlit scenery every night, this is last Thursday-Friday.
