Arctic Academy is a programme service company specialised in Northern Lights. The person behind these programmes is an active researcher of the Northern Lights, space physicist, Dr. Esa Turunen. He was formerly working at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, but is now retired after serving the observatory for 35 years. He will introduce to you Nature's most beautiful color display - the active

Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis. Northern Lights shows (duration 45 min or 30 min) are arranged in wintertime for groups by advance booking at Luosto Ski Centre or upon agreement anywhere else in Finnish Lapland.

Revontuliesityksen ohjelmasisällön on luonut edelleen aktiivinen revontulitutkija, Sodankylän geofysiikan observatorion johtajan tehtävästä v. 2019 eläkkeelle siirtynyt avaruusfyysikko Dos. Esa Turunen.

Where to go in order to see the Northern Lights at Luosto? If you are not in the mood of climbing up to the Ukko-Luosto Scenic hut (200m height difference), the easy reachable option is AHVENLAMPI lake, 5 minutes walk from central Luosto. View like this is not every night, but be patient, if you stay for one week, there is a fair chance of starry nights. These images are from October, 2023.

Is warm weather always sign of clouds and bad Aurora viewing conditions? No, no, yesterday we had partly as warm as -1C, and after a week of cloudy skies (where above the clouds many active Northern Lights occurred last week, however); suddenly there were stars. The beauty of the aurora color could be enjoyed as soon as the sunlight disappeared below horizon.

Last night offered an unbelievably beautiful and somewhat unexpected display of Northern Lights. At first, skies were cloudy and the cold (-27C) atmosphere misty, specially at low places. No stars (only faintly planet Jupiter) were visible. But then suddenly, the sky cleared up for a short time, exactly at the same time as the Northern Lights activated in all its glory. It is always worth staying awake throughout the magnetic midnight😊.

Recent cold weather was mostly also bringing ice crystals in the air, even fog near ground. However, last night suddenly revealed the beauty of the starry skies for a while. Yes, of course, as expected even with slow solar wind speed, there was a time with Aurora, partly active also in the north. Here a diffuse green glow of quiet Aurora is seen in the well-known constellation of Ursa Major on 18 Nov 2023.

We got permanent-looking snow cover last week, and thus conditions to enjoy Northern Lights are getting better, while snow reflects even weak lights. And yesterday we went up to Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut - of course in order to observe the lights - with a Northern Lights enthusiast Lina Skandevall. It was a fabulous night, since stars were visible almost through all night, and Aurora danced from early evening to late morning. Destination recommended for Northern Lights enthusiasts by Lina, too.

Good bye Aurora Season 2022-2023! Here in the North the sky turns too bright for visual observation of Northern Lights normally in the middle of April. This year we got an amazing show of Lights as late as 23-24 April. The Aurora were then seen as far south as in France. At Sodankylä the sky was blue through the night. But the Aurora were fabulous.

Temperatures below -30C last night, how not to freeze? Just get some physical activity, like climbing on top of the Luosto mountain. And in general it is 10 degrees warmer there, like last night at the Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut.

Year 2023 started actively with Aurora every night - but mostly above clouds here at Sodankylä. Last night was finally clear, and the Moon appeared very bright. This is how it looked like when viewing to northwest.
