Tropical cyclone Mal intensified into a Category 3 tropical cyclone overnight, but it is now showing signs of weakening. Presently, it has sustained winds of 65 knots (120 km/hr) and gusts of 90 knots (165 km/hr) close its centre (minimum central pressure of 975 hPa).

The centre of severe tropical cyclone Mal was located 155 km southwest of Nadi or 205 km west-northwest of Kadavu at 5am this morning. This indicates that the system has passed Nadi and its now moving close to Kadavu.

It is currently moving southeast at a speed of 17 knots or 31km/hr. While the winds should gradually ease over the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups and western Viti Levu, gales force winds may continue to be experienced for few more hours.

The risk of storm to gale force winds are still maintained for Vatulele, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Current analysis indicates that the destructive hurricane force winds associated with the system is confined close to the centre.

So the chance of hurricane force winds affecting land areas is low. Several parts of the country have received significant rainfall in the past 12 hours.

Further rainfall will increase the risk of flooding in low laying and flood prone areas. The next high tide is at around 7.30am.

Evacuation Flight Opportunity from Tokyo for Fiji Citizens

Fiji Airways has confirmed an evacuation flight for Fijians in Japan wishing to return home. The service (FJ1350) will operate on Saturday 25 April 2020, departing Tokyo-Narita (NRT) at 9.40pm and arriving into Nadi at 9.20am on Sunday 26 April.

Guests can book tickets online at www.fijiairways.com or by calling the airline’s Reservations Centre. Guests holding unused Fiji Airways’ tickets for Narita-Nadi flights are also able to book themselves on the evacuation flight at no additional cost by contacting Fiji Airways Reservations with their booking reference details at hand. Limited seats are available on all evacuation flights.

All flight guests are advised that only Fiji citizens (Fijian passport holders) are able to enter Fiji at this time. As with all recent evacuation flights arrivals, all arriving guests on these flights will be required to go into self-isolation at a Fijian Government-mandated facility for up to 28-days. They will not be able to go to their homes or residences. Per the directive of authorities, transit passengers cannot be uplifted on evacuation flights to Fiji.
