Tropical cyclone Mal intensified into a Category 3 tropical cyclone overnight, but it is now showing signs of weakening. Presently, it has sustained winds of 65 knots (120 km/hr) and gusts of 90 knots (165 km/hr) close its centre (minimum central pressure of 975 hPa).

The centre of severe tropical cyclone Mal was located 155 km southwest of Nadi or 205 km west-northwest of Kadavu at 5am this morning. This indicates that the system has passed Nadi and its now moving close to Kadavu.

It is currently moving southeast at a speed of 17 knots or 31km/hr. While the winds should gradually ease over the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups and western Viti Levu, gales force winds may continue to be experienced for few more hours.

The risk of storm to gale force winds are still maintained for Vatulele, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Current analysis indicates that the destructive hurricane force winds associated with the system is confined close to the centre.

So the chance of hurricane force winds affecting land areas is low. Several parts of the country have received significant rainfall in the past 12 hours.

Further rainfall will increase the risk of flooding in low laying and flood prone areas. The next high tide is at around 7.30am.

Evacuation Flight Opportunity from Tokyo for Fiji Citizens

Fiji Airways has confirmed an evacuation flight for Fijians in Japan wishing to return home. The service (FJ1350) will operate on Saturday 25 April 2020, departing Tokyo-Narita (NRT) at 9.40pm and arriving into Nadi at 9.20am on Sunday 26 April.

Guests can book tickets online at www.fijiairways.com or by calling the airline’s Reservations Centre. Guests holding unused Fiji Airways’ tickets for Narita-Nadi flights are also able to book themselves on the evacuation flight at no additional cost by contacting Fiji Airways Reservations with their booking reference details at hand. Limited seats are available on all evacuation flights.

All flight guests are advised that only Fiji citizens (Fijian passport holders) are able to enter Fiji at this time. As with all recent evacuation flights arrivals, all arriving guests on these flights will be required to go into self-isolation at a Fijian Government-mandated facility for up to 28-days. They will not be able to go to their homes or residences. Per the directive of authorities, transit passengers cannot be uplifted on evacuation flights to Fiji.

Fiji Link To Suspend All Outer-Island Flights
29 March 2020

Fiji Link, Fiji Airways’ subsidiary, will suspend domestic operations to all outer-islands by 6pm tomorrow, Monday 30 March, in line with Government directives. The final services between Suva-Labasa and Nadi-Labasa will operate tomorrow (Monday). From Tuesday, the only Fiji Link flights will be between Nadi and Suva, operating at a reduced frequency. Suspended services include flights from the Nadi and Suva hubs to Labasa, Taveuni, Savusavu, Kadavu, Vanuabalavu, Lakeba, Cicia, Koro, Rotuma.

Mr Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways Group Managing Director and CEO says: “The majority of our customers understand that these measures are necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19. We will gladly adhere to Government directives, and stand ready to assist if charter flights are required for the freight of essential supplies to Vanua Levu and outer islands.”

“Customers holding bookings for flights which are now suspended can rest assured that their bookings are safe. We look forward to welcoming them onboard when we resume operations.”

Fiji Link will announce resumption of domestic services after approvals from authorities.

If you have a non-urgent matter or query, we may not be able to respond to you immediately, and request your patience and understanding at this time. Information on new bookings, baggage allowance and pre-paid excess baggage is easily available on our website.

Re-bookings

We realise that many guests may wish to defer travel at this time. We are offering flexibility for guests wishing to change their flights to defer travel without any change fees or hold credit for later travel (a fare difference may apply, especially if partner airlines are involved in the booking).

• If guests wish to change their travel dates, they can do so without incurring any fees (reissue fees and fare difference included) should they travel by 30 June 2020.

• There will be no reissue fees (fare difference fee will apply) should guests wish to travel after 30 June, 2020.

• If your flights were booked through a travel agency or third-party website (for example Trip.com, Webjet or others), you will need to contact these companies directly to make changes to your booking. Fiji Airways is unable to make changes to bookings done by third-party websites. The same conditions listed above will apply.

• If you are unsure as to when you would like to travel, you can have your fare held in credit. Upon rebooking, any change fees will be waived.

We assure guests that they will not lose the fare paid directly to Fiji Airways.

Schedule Changes

Fiji Airways will continue to monitor demand and entry restrictions by states across its international network, and may reduce/cancel or change flight schedules if required.

Important notice for guests impacted by cancellations and re-bookings: All guests booked directly with Fiji Airways with a valid email address will receive a schedule change notification. Guests booked through travel agents and third parties will be contacted by their respective agencies.
