Starting as a kitchen steward, Mohammed Shamim Ali moved up the ranks of the culinary world to become the Executive Chef for Tropica Island Resort in the Mamanucas.

A key part of his success is the bold step he took early in his career to upskill himself by studying commercial cookery at the Australia Pacific Training Coalition.

Shamim was also a finalist in the pilot season of the Australian Government funded Pacific Island Food Revolution TV show that featured cooks from Pacific island nations in a competition to celebrate the Pacific's incredible food heritage and promote local, healthy food in our region.

Being part of the show helped sharpen his vision to promote Fijian cuisine internationally. In his current role, Shamim hopes to continue creating new and nutritious menus using local foods to provide foodies with an authentic culinary experience.

Australia is proud to support the training of Fijians like Shamim to gain valuable skills and knowledge for local industries that contribute to Fiji’s economic growth.

We are inspired by the many young Pacific Islanders like Australia Awards scholar Adi Asenaca Rusawele who are taking up the challenge to shape and drive solutions for sustainable development and climate mitigation.

She is currently pursuing her Honours research on modelling the impact of on the production of taro and cassava in Fiji at the University of Southern Queensland - Australia

She says her studies has helped her gain holistic knowledge on crop biology, physiology, pathology, agronomy and plant microbe interaction, to assist her work as an Agriculture Officer at Ministry of Agriculture Fiji

We wish her well as she completes her studies this year.
