Today is the 80th Anniversary of the "Battle of Ecueille". Not a big one in the history books but very important for its residents, especially those that still remain from that time. And there is at least one in these photos! 25th Aug 1944 saw the Germans retreating and generally causing havoc, destroying anything in their way. They hadn't reckoned on coming across a small detachment of the 8th Cuirassiers (Cavalry although light armoured by this time) and the local farmers and Resistance. A bloody battle ensued and many died and were injured on both sides but the French prevailed at the end. The action saw the commune win a Croix de Guerres for the bravery and courage of its inhabitants at the time. Pictures below are from today's ceremonies.

Over the last couple of years, we have been developing another, more enclosed, seating area for the gite. The plants around the edge of the gite garden have now matured a little giving a nice secluded area to read a book, do a bit of sunbathing or just enjoy the peace and calm of our gite.
Thanks to our friend Paula for a lot of the work involved!

Restaurant La Salamandre has been awarded the Bib Gourmand 2024 by the Michelin Guide for its beautiful, delicious gourmet dishes at affordable prices. Only 56 such distinctions have been awarded in the whole of France. "Owner Jeroen Steentjes and his wife Marike Nuijs are delighted and proud to have received this accolade. For them, it's confirmation and recognition of their hard work since opening their restaurant in May 2022. Our Dutch friends, Andre and Femke have been out with the Nikon again. Couple of days back we had a thunderstorm and they were out there again - the King and Queen of the night sky. Bear in mind that these pictures were taken in very dark conditions. Take a look below the cloud line where forked lightning can also be seen.

Every year, our neighbouring village of Heugnes, puts on a major spectacle with parade and fireworks. This year was another stunner!

Our lovely Dutch friends, Femke and Andre took these fantastic photos from around the gite last night. The sky is good at this time of year while the moon is down. The period of darkness starts extending now as the nights get longer. What an evening!
There were shooting stars on a regular basis too!
The cloudy bit down the middle is the Milky Way and the last photo show the Pleiades and Jupiter. Apparently a piece of the Chinese spacestation in construction appeared at one point, very bright. Elon Musk's satellites were also regular visitors to our sky. All in all a great evening - thank you Femke and Andre

Very interesting map showing the routes the cranes take. Now we know (roughly) where they are heading when they fly over!
