๐Ÿ”Ž This memorial depicts a Scottish soldier wearing a tartan kilt, traditional Scottish dress. He is facing the German lines just in front of him, at โ€˜Ravine Yโ€™. Two lions, a symbol of bravery, stand directly in front of him.

๐Ÿ’ฅ In July 1916, the village of Poziรจres was the scene of bloody fighting, to the point where the village was totally destroyed. ๐Ÿชฆ Frederick Janes and William Miller are buried at ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’‚๐’–๐’Ž๐’๐’๐’•-๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’Ž๐’†๐’'๐’” ๐’€ ๐‘น๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’๐’† ๐‘ช๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’š, among the thousands of soldiers who died on the evening of July 1, 1916.

These soldiers share the same grave, and both regimental badges are engraved on it: the Border Regiment, an infantry regiment, for W.Miller and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment for F.Janes. Then, for each soldier, you'll find, if you know this information: service number, rank, name, regiment, date of death, age and sometimes a citation.

With over 410 Commonwealth cemeteries in the Somme, it's important to remember and commemorate the sacrifice of all these men โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘‰ The concrete is reminiscent of the colour of chalk (a stone that is very common in the Somme), while the white colour aims to blend the building into its surroundings: the medieval castle and the pond that borders it.

The Battle of the Somme, one of the most deadly of the whole war with well over a million casualties, began just over a hundred years ago on the 1st July 1916.

The Somme Battlefields will forever hold an important place in Australian and New Zealand memory. A century ago, these quiet towns, villages and fields of Northern France witnessed the triumphs, tragedy and unimaginable loss of these two nations' forces.

More than any other part of the front, the Somme became a world arena : the alliance between the French and the British and the arrival of troops from different colonies concentrated more than twenty different nationalities here.
