๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Day 12: The 12 Cols of Christmas ๐ŸŽ

Weโ€™ve reached the final day of our festive journey, and what better way to end than with a col that combines breathtaking views, rich history, and a touch of Mediterranean magic?

๐ŸŒŸ Col de Belitres
๐Ÿ”๏ธ 165m
๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Road

The Col de Belitres is a must-ride gem perched on the Mediterranean coast road, marking the border between France and Spain. Starting in the French village of Cerbรจre, itโ€™s a 4km climb with an average grade of 4.3%โ€”perfectly manageable for cyclists of all levels. Whether youโ€™re gunning for a personal best or taking it slow to soak in the scenery, the sparkling Mediterranean Sea will keep you company every pedal stroke.

As you exit the final hairpin bend, shaded by pine trees, youโ€™ll pass the old customs posts that once guarded the Spanish border. Even though theyโ€™re no longer in use, thereโ€™s something undeniably special about crossing a border checkpoint on two wheels.

At the summit, pause to visit the open-air exhibition, a poignant tribute to the 100,000 people who crossed this col on foot during the Spanish Civil War, seeking refuge in France. From this vantage point, the views are simply unforgettableโ€”you can see France, Spain, and endless stretches of blue Mediterranean Sea.

๐ŸŽ Thatโ€™s a wrap on the 12 Cols of Christmas! Thank you for following along as we showcased the incredible diversity of the Mediterranean Pyrenees, the ultimate playground for cyclists. We hope these posts have inspired you to join us and experience these unforgettable climbs firsthand.

๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Road

Nestled in the Haut Vallespir, the Col de la Seille offers more than just a stop on the way to higher summits like the Col dโ€™Aresโ€”this col is a gem in its own right, blending stunning views, rewarding climbs, and unique charm.

Starting from Pyrenees Cycling Club, itโ€™s a 22km ascent, climbing 850 vertical meters. The climb begins gently, winding its way through the fortified village of Prats de Mollo, before tackling steeper gradients shaded by ancient chestnut forests. Donโ€™t miss the mountain spring halfway upโ€”a perfect spot to refill your bottle with crystal-clear, cold water.

At the top, a dramatic hairpin bend awaits, offering panoramic views of both Catalunya and France. On clear days, you can spot Lamanรจre, the southernmost village in mainland France, while behind you, the majestic Canigรณ rises, its snow-capped peak gleaming in the distance.

This col is also one of our favourite spots to serve our riders a homemade picnic lunch, made even better by the view and the satisfaction of the climb.

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Day 10: The 12 Cols of Christmas ๐ŸŽ

Low in altitude, high in history and viewsโ€”today we bring you the timeless charm of the Col de Panissars!

๐ŸŒ„ Col de Panissars
๐Ÿ”๏ธ 325m
๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Gravel & Road Friendly

After yesterdayโ€™s monumental off-road col, weโ€™re switching gears with a climb that may be smaller in stature but is absolutely bursting with character and history. Our guests come with unique goals and strengths, and our carefully curated routes reflect this diversityโ€”thereโ€™s something for everyone here.

The 9km climb from Maureillas-Las-Illas, gaining 275m, begins on a tarmac road before transitioning to a smooth concrete bike path. Here, you join the EuroVelo 8, a cycling route that stretches from Southern Spain to Greece. Spot the bike path sign marking โ€œMenton: 843kmโ€ and marvel at the scale of this epic network!

The real magic of the Col de Panissars lies in its history. This is where two mighty Roman roadsโ€”the Via Augusta and Via Domitiaโ€”converged to cross the Pyreneesโ€™ Alberes range. Remarkably, cart tracks carved into the rock by Roman travelers remain visible to this day.

And if that wasnโ€™t enough, legend has it that this very spot marked Hannibalโ€™s crossing of the Pyrenees with his elephants. Imagine pedaling through the Mediterranean sun, your tyres crunching on the sandy road, as you ponder the incredible journeys this col has witnessed over millennia.

๐ŸŒ„Collada de Roques Blanques
๐Ÿ”๏ธ2250 m
๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธGravel & MTB

Letโ€™s dive into the headlines of this awe-inspiring climb: 39km climb from Pyrenees Cycling Club, with nearly 2,000m of elevation gain. Yes, itโ€™s a beastโ€”but one worth taming! ๐Ÿ˜

Nestled in the Canigou mountain range, the Collade de Roques Blanques sits high on the watershed dividing the Vallespir and Conflent valleys. This open ridge is a summer grazing spot for livestock, you'll pass the shepherdโ€™s stone hut as you climbโ€”a reminder of the Massif du Canigou's pastoral traditions.

The adventure begins in Prats-de-Mollo, heading toward the thermal baths at La Preste. From here, a right turn onto a tarmac road marked โ€œRรฉserve Naturelleโ€ signals the start of the real challenge: 16km at an 8% average grade. With wide-open views around every bend and refreshing mountain streams along the way, thereโ€™s plenty to distract you from the burn in your legs. Beyond the Col des Basses, motor vehicles are forbidden in the nature reserve. Itโ€™s just you, the silence of nature, and breathtaking views that stretch up to 60kmโ€”pure bliss!

About 6km from the col, the tarmac yields to dirt. Itโ€™s no Girona champagne gravel up here above 2,000m, but itโ€™s still perfectly rideable on a gravel bike. A gear ratio of 1:1 or lower will make this monster climb far more enjoyable.

At the col, youโ€™ll be greeted by the curious Mรฉrens mountain horsesโ€”donโ€™t be surprised if they take a keen interest in your snacks!

Remember that Pyrenees CC is about all kinds of bike rides for all kinds of people - whilst today's col is a beast, we do have rides from 25km for even beginner cyclists.

๐ŸŒ„ Col de Formentera๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Rising to 1,130 meters, the Col de Formentera rewards you with stunning views and a sense of accomplishment. This 13km gravel climb gains 876 vertical meters, averaging just under 7%โ€”a true test of your legs or your gear ratios!

The journey begins on a well-graded fire road, where the steady gradient lets you find your rhythm. In the shaded embrace of evergreen oak forests, you might spot wild goats crossing your path or catch a glimpse of buzzards soaring overhead.

After passing through the picturesque village of Montbolo, the trail widens and transforms into a compacted sandy surface.. But donโ€™t get too comfortableโ€”the final section to Col de Formentera ups the ante, challenging your off-road skills and rewarding your efforts with rugged beauty.

From here, the track becomes a test of skill. Off-camber sections and exposed bedrock demand focus and finesseโ€”looking far ahead will help you pick the perfect line.

Your first landmark is the Gare de Formentera, an old mining railway station perched on a ledge at 1,000 meters. Once a bustling hub, this station saw mountain steam trains unloading wagons of iron ore into hoppers for the cable car system.

From the railway station, the final stretch to the Coll de Formentera follows the old railway bed. The gentle gradient here offers a welcome break, letting you shift into a bigger gear for the first time since leaving the valley floor. At the col, youโ€™re rewarded with 360-degree views and endless options to extend your adventure. Stay on the railway trail to discover moreโ€”it's a playground for gravel riders and history buffs alike.

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Day 7: The 12 Cols of Christmas ๐ŸŒŸ - New Year's Eve Special!

On the 7th day, to celebrate New Year's eve, we present our valley's highest road col. This is what cycling dreams are made of- climbing for hours and finishing above the clouds.

Col d'Ares, France
๐Ÿ”๏ธ1500 meters
๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธRoad

๐ŸŒ„ Col dโ€™Ares: The Road Climb ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Earlier in this series, we showcased the gravel variant of Col dโ€™Aresโ€”now itโ€™s time to celebrate the road version, and what a beauty it is! This climb delivers the full Pyrenean-Alpine experience, as you ascend through dramatically shifting landscapes. Starting in dense, shaded forest, youโ€™ll pedal higher into open meadows dotted with grazing cattle, the scenery evolving with every turn of the pedals.

From the village of Le Tech, itโ€™s a 20km climb with 998m of elevation gainโ€”a true test for any cyclist. And the reward? At the summit, youโ€™re greeted by a set of breathtaking switchbacks that could easily grace a Tour de France helicopter shot. (Fun fact: this exact route was featured in the 1968 Tour!) The only reason it hasnโ€™t returned is the remoteness of this hidden gem, far from the bustling towns needed for the Tourโ€™s logistical entourage.

The col marks the French-Catalan border, where your adventure can continue into Mollรณ or turn back for an exhilarating 30km descent straight to Pyrenees Cycling Club. Either way, this climb is pure magic, from the first pedal stroke to the last.

At the base of the descent lies one of our favorite spa hotels, a highlight on our self-guided Volcano Gravel Tour. Itโ€™s the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. You can see both the French border and the Mediterranean Sea from parts of this ride; a great place to make the most of our clear skies and 300 days of sunshine per year.

The descent itself is a riderโ€™s dream. The red bedrock offers superb grip and delivers that oh-so-satisfying crunch beneath your tires. With some steep and technical sections, itโ€™s ideal for gravel enthusiasts seeking a challenge or riders with MTB experience. (Hint: leave the 35mm tires at home for this one ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Day 5 is here, and weโ€™re still climbing ! Todayโ€™s col is all about sweeping curves and more gentle gradients. Letโ€™s kick off with what makes this col truly special: it starts right from Pyrenees CC and marks an international border! Thereโ€™s something exhilarating about crossing into a new country on your rideโ€”itโ€™s a unique thrill and a satisfying reward as you crest the col and roll into a different landscape on the other side.

The Col de Coustouges, approached from the French side, offers a steady 13km climb with an average gradient of around 4%. This makes it accessible to all cyclistsโ€”whether youโ€™re a fully loaded cycle tourer enjoying the journey or a powerhouse looking to smash the segment in a big gear. (Fun fact: the KOM for this climb is an impressive 27 minutes! โšก)

At the summit, your adventure can continue into Catalunya, heading toward the stunning Costa Brava. Or, descend back into France and visit the charming village of Saint Laurent de Cerdans. The 12 Cols of Christmas - Day 4

Col de la Descarga (Les mines de Batรจre)
๐Ÿ”๏ธ1470 meters
๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธGravel, Road & MTB routes

Imagine an unspoiled road climb that is 20km long, a winding ribbon of tarmac climbing 1200 vertical meters - that's the same as the Col du Tourmalet from Sainte-Marie! A col that hardly anybody in the cycling world has heard of. You can ride it in shorts for most of the year thanks to the region's Mediterranean climate. AND you can get a coffee at the top!

This is the Col de la Descarga, leading to the abandoned iron mines at Batรจre. Perched on the southern slopes of the Massif du Canigo , Batรจre is a cyclists' playground with road, gravel and MTB routes in abundance.

The road climb is an out-and-back affair for the top section, and we suggest climbing via the shaded and traffic-free Riuferrer road to the village of Corsavy. The descent is breathtaking and light on traffic. It's so fast and narrow in places that you might have to stop to be able to look at the view.

For you gravel lovers, the climb is also 20km and all gravel, passing the village of Montbolo and following the route of the mountain railway that carried iron ore to the cable car stations that would send it down to the valley floor

The enduro MTB crowd are also spoiled for choice on this hillside, and the road to top makes for easy uplifts. We have four technical singletrack routes that here are natural ungraded paths, but would be graded red and black in the UK or USA. These are not groomed bikepark trails - they are super natural with drops, tight switchbacks and stream crossings.

From Batรจre you can connect gravel roads to reach the Col de Palomรจre - keep an eye out for this later on in the '12 Cols of Christmqs' series

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Day 3: The 12 Cols of Christmas ๐ŸŽ

Le Col d'Ares
๐Ÿ”๏ธ1500 meters
๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธGravel (road variant to follow, equally awesome!)

Itโ€™s Day 3, and todayโ€™s featured col will take your breath awayโ€”both from the climb and the stunning views to the Mediterranean from the top! Each pedal stroke brings you closer to experiencing the magic of the Haut Vallespir; the undiscovered gravel paradise. Letโ€™s ride!

Cycling cols are often described as 'legendary', and in the case of Le Col d'Ares this is definitely the right word. First records of the col are from the year 878, and it also played a significant role in the Nine Years Wars in 1691 when the Spanish came to siege Prats de Mollo. More recently, the col was the passage point for more than 100,000 refugees fleeing the Spanish Civil War in 1939.

On the gravel bike you can climb either from the fortified village of Prats de Mollo or via Llamenere- the most southerly village in mainland France. Both on chunky gravel, these climbs are long and with nearly 1000 vertical metres, they are the kind of climbs where you find a rhythym or chat to your mates (and maybe wish you had a 50 tooth cassette!)

When your legs and lungs are begging for a rest, the flatter trails on the ridge are a welcome distraction and the viezs just get better and better as you trace the border, with Catalunya on your left and France on your right.

The 13th century Tour de Mir watch tower with its viewing deck is the perfect place for a snack break (or we can serve your picnic here). From this prominent point on the border you can see two countries and all the 60km to the beach.

You might see a few mushroom pickers or hikers but apart from that you're alone with the wild horses, vultures and breathtaking views.

Yesterday, we kicked off our celebration of the Mediterranean Pyreneesโ€™ most iconic climbs. Today, weโ€™re unwrapping Col #2โ€”a ride that promises both challenge and breathtaking beauty. Ready to discover your next adventure?

The Col de Llauro from Cรฉret is a perfectly smooth tarmac climb from Cรฉret to the small village of Llauro. At 380 meters altitude it's definitely one of the smaller Pyrenean climbs and is really worth checking out since the easy to moderate gradient means it's suitable for all.

This climb featured in the 2021 Tour de France, hence the new tarmac, and once at the top you have a choice of gravel or road routes to return back to the valley floor.

From the Col de Llauro you can see the Mediterranean, the Spanish border and acres of vineyards below. This is the Vallespir - where the mountains meet the sea and cultures and landscapes mix to create a perfect playground for cyclists

Day 1 - Collada Fonda, Catalunya

Located close to the French - Catalan border, Collada Fonda is the high point of a stunning 17km gravel road that meets up with the road climb to Vallter 2000 - a famous summit finish for the Tour of Catalunya.

This col is true open mountain and should be top of your list if you love unspoiled, natural landscapes and 360 degree views. Nature lovers will want to spend hours watching the soaring vultures, and if you're lucky you might get a glimpse of a European Wildcat.

โœ… End of year personal challenge

Day 1 ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

In the company of .pyrenees
and .lowery we rolled out at 6am and shared the first climb across the Pyrรฉnรฉes with . Crossing the border before sunrise and knowing we had 130km of fast, flat gravel ahead was a great motivator and we rolled along at a good pace through orchards, farms and villages. It was cold though, reaching zero degrees which fatigued us pretty fast. This also means thick winter gloves and not many photos as I can't hold my phone when wearing them! After 192km we tucked our bikes into bed at the Airbnb and went for dinner in Girona's old town.

Day 2 ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Once we had filled out stomachs with jam sandwiches, croissants and other convenience store delicacies we rode out at 6.30am. Soon out of Girona, the trails were dry and hardpacked which makes for good progress. By the time the sun came up we were on the old railway bike path to Olot. Olot and the volcanic natural park is a beautiful, wild region packed with history. How come so few people know about a town with such natural beauty, volcanoes you can walk inside of and even a 2 star Michelin restaurant! Olot is fast becoming one of our favourite destinations on a gravel bike.

Our crossing point back over the Pyrenees into France is le Col d'Ares at 1500 metres. We had seen weather forecasts for this col of minus 15 degrees and 120kph winds, so made a plan B and a plan C. You never know if you can believe the weather forecast, right? Well this time it was extremely accurate. Entering the village of Camprodon we were hit with gusts of wind so strong that pushed us 10 meters across the car park we were in. To stay upright on the bike, you had to turn and let the wind carry you. So we discounted and pushed our bikes into the headwind which grew stronger. Next our bikes were pulled from the ground and flew like kites; it was time to enact plan B. Call for a lift. Who knows how strong the wind would be another 500 metres higher at the col?

285km of gravel ridden over two days - a superb way to end the year ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ
