A slightly cooler day today after the first canicule (heat wave) of the year and a chance to visit Capestang - 20 minutes from Mimarmel. A coffee in the shade of the plane trees in the main square by the magnificent collegiate church dating from the 12th to 15th century. Also time to reflect on the terrible events of June 1944.

Lunch with a view of the étang today at We had the menu du jour and chose a smoked salmon starter, filet dourade / three different meats and a deconstructed apricot tart. Beautifully presented, delicious and excellent value at less than €22 per head. ☀️🍴😃

Did you know that De Gaulle once had aspirations to build an airport in Beziers that would have been big enough to accommodate Concorde? Today Beziers airport is one of the little local airports used by our guests.

When it’s 38° a good place to explore and cool down is Terra Vinea, about 40 minutes from Mimarmel. Set in an old gypsum mine you will start by taking a little road train to the entrance. You will descend down one of the tunnels and experience a light show. You can then explore the rest of the mine with the help of an audio guide and see exhibits relating to the local wine industry and the area’s Roman roots. The visit finishes with a wine tasting.

A visit to the nearby (20 minutes from Mimarmel) village of Minerve this morning. The village is classified among the “ Most Beautiful Villages of France “ and is in a picturesque setting with medieval streets, natural bridges, exceptional geology and breathtaking panoramas. Between the Cévennes and the Montagne Noire, Minerve rises on a rocky spur overlooking the Cesse and Brian gorges.

Less than 100 metres from Mimarmel are the Ginestas vineyards. A quick trip to the local cave this morning to top up the wine 🍷 supplies.

An entertaining visit to the neighbouring canal side village of Ventenac this evening. We saw a performance of “le pianO du lac”. The show started with a lady dressed as a butterfly playing a grand piano mounted on a pontoon being pushed around the middle of the canal du midi by a chap wearing a wetsuit and flippers. A bit bonkers but nevertheless a fun evening and some funds raised for the replanting of the canal side trees.

When it’s 35° outside it’s rather nice to pop into Mangeons Frais to cool down and shop for fresh fruit and vegetables.

Monday lunch at l’écluse restaurant between Olonzac and Homps on the Canal du Midi. The perfect place for a lovely meal and to watch the boats navigating the locks

Narbonne-Plage yesterday. Over the last couple of years the centre has been revamped-it’s now finished and looking great.
