Winter day trips from our first year here 👋🏼.

Beynac et Cazenac and Sarlat la Canada are both less than one hours drive from our holiday rentals and are popular destinations for day trips with all of our guests.

Le printemps est à nos portes ☺️🌱🌷

Spring is just around the corner here in Dordogne! Our rose arch took a bit of a battering this winter but we can’t wait to see it in full bloom again this spring. For those impatient gardeners (like us) this rambling rose is probably the fastest growing thing ever and is WOW when in bloom ✌️🌿

The Forges de Savignac-Lédrier site is very close within walking distance of the house, a little further by car you will be able to explore the Vaux stationery stores where you can visit the original paper mill. For horse lovers, or just for a great day out at the races, don’t forget to explore Pompadour.

It’s winter now, here in Dordogne. When we wake up each morning the valleys are covered in a blanket of freezing fog which eventually yields to clear blue skies and bright sunshine. Winter is glorious when it’s like this. One of our favourite things about living here has always been the distinct seasons throughout the year, we look forward to each one.

The inhabitants of Dordogne tend to spend a lot of time indoors during winter so it sometimes feels like we’ve got the whole landscape to ourselves. We can walk for miles in splendid isolation until we meet someone on a country path who is experiencing the same sensation. We exchange a cheery ‘bonjour’ before continuing on our way.

Weekly markets still offer a buzz and we’re always fascinated to watch the truffle sellers at work during January. They occupy a quiet corner of the market-place and are often dressed in hooded cloaks with assorted medallions hanging from their necks like some kind of brotherhood from a forgotten time. The buyers are dressed differently, they tend to be well-heeled city folk dressed in weatherproof jackets and sensible shoes, and there’s always a policeman or two lurking around in the shadows due to the large quantities of cash changing hands (prices vary but they can often be in the region of €400 per kg).

Truffle markets and festivals can be found across the Perigord and Quercy regions throughout January in places such as Perigueux, Sarlat and Lalbenque. Not to be missed.

Winter is also a time for us here at Voila Villas to get ready for the year ahead. We don’t see many guests face-to-face at this time but we deal with lots of enquiries about summer holidays and we have time to add new properties to our website and tie up all of the admin jobs that have been put on the backburner until we have more time. We also have an endless list of pruning, trimming, tidying and planning to work on in the gardens that we look after which keeps us busy and warm.

This year we have a new addition to our portfolio of self-catering holiday rentals, ‘Les Maratoux’ coming to a screen near you, soon.

A little flashback to SUMMER

Always at this time of year we look back at our photos from the summer and have to pinch ourselves that we do actually live here, in the beautiful Dordogne sunshine ☀️ 🇫🇷

Moulin du Martinet is perfect for a large family/friends group as it sleeps 8 people really comfortably. Interested or would like some more information please just let us know ✉️

What else would you do while waiting to cross the channel! if you need a dog model, we’re ready✌️🐾 📸

On another note, because we’re often asked, the pet friendly cabins onboard these ferries are really great ⭐️ ⛴️ 100% recommend! Super clean, quiet, comfy and easily accessible from the car deck.
