It's 5pm on the first really sunny day in weeks. The sun is gently disappearing behind the trees, the crows and blackbirds are singing evensong and there is the comforting smell of wood smoke as neighbours light their log-burning stoves. The shortest days are behind us and spring is in the air.
We had a booking last night which takes us to 28 days booked so far for this summer and it finally feels as if an end to the blanket of hibernation and confinement may be on the horizon. I don't know about you, but this most recent isolation has been the hardest to take. Lockdown was lifted here weeks, ago but life has not resumed normality as people have remained inside and safe.
Today's rays of sunshine offer hope of a brighter future for us all. Wherever you are, I hope the sun is shining on you too. ❤️
Sundays are always peaceful here, as no-one is allowed to use machinery like saws or mowers from noon until 4pm on a Sunday, but lockdown means no traffic on the lane either, so the birds are reclaiming the space and filling the silence.
6.30am it’s still getting light and the birds own the garden with their song. Sitting here with a cup of tea enjoying the start of a new day.
I have no idea what this shrub is called that’s growing in the garden, but it’s burst into feathery fronds of flowers this morning. Have the sound on for the birdsong and see if you can hear our nesting hoopoes with their distinctive ‘bloop, bloop, bloop” call.
Feeling very sad today. We’re a bit like Miss Havisham, all dressed up in wedding finery but there’s no groom. This should have been the day we welcomed our first guests to stay. It’s 22’ in the garden, filled with birdsong but the gites are standing empty. 😢
Opened the pool up this afternoon to give it a clean after winter but there’s no-one to enjoy it. It’s very sad to see a place that should be full of the sounds of splashes, kids playing games and adults clinking wine glasses, being so quiet.
Feeling very sorry for ourselves and very worried. We needed to take money this year. Just praying that we get some bookings for August and the autumn.
For now though, we’re going to sweep the pool and get in - someone ought to be using it - and advertise the hell out of the gites on Booking & Airbnb in the hope of sharing our lovely space with someone when this is over.
It’s incredibly peaceful here today, just the birds tweeting and bees buzzing on the clover. The trauma of C19 seems a world away but it’s there, some distance away, silent and deadly. It breaks my heart to type this, especially as we are a fledgling business in its first year and we need guests, but with regret we have to say we will be closed for Easter. It’s the responsible thing to do to prevent spread into the area which is currently covid-free, as far as we know.
Please understand we don’t want to do this and we will review the situation, based on government advice. Currently we hope to re-open for the beginning of May.
Please keep checking in on our page for further updates and tales from the wine cellar. In the mean time keep yourselves safe and well. Love Bev, Liam & Jen. ###
We’ve had several enquiries where people have expressed a few heebie jeebies at the thought of hiring a car and driving in Bergerac. Of course, if you want to stay local and have a quiet break, you can manage without a car. We are only 2 and a half miles from the centre of Bergerac, so it costs very little to get a cab into town for the nightlife, but if you want to explore the stunning medieval sights and the beautiful landscape of the Dordogne valley, you can hire a car very cheaply for a day or two. (Car hire starts from about 10€ per day). Just to illustrate how easy it is to drive on these relatively empty roads, I’m posting a clip of the drive from the main road to the airport to our drive to show you how quiet it is. You’re more likely to encounter a deer than a van.
