Truffle hunting magpie

Last truffle hunt of the summer season today and we’re looking forward to seeing if last night’s guest makes another appearance. He joined the group on the hunt and tapped at a water bottle, so they gave him a capful of water. He then stayed with the gang for the rest of the hunt, in spite of the dogs’ obvious agitation at his presence. We thought he might fly off as the group headed back to the summer kitchen for the truffle tasting, but no! He joined in and hopped from shoulder to shoulder as they tasted truffles and sipped champagne. There was a bit of mayhem when he caused Johann to drop some cheese on the floor, and he did break a champagne glass, but overall it was an unexpected brush with nature that was enjoyed by all. Bird was last seen heading back to the car on a guest’s shoulder. So perhaps they have a pet now?

Getting all the elements ready for the first shipment of the year to our truffle tree parents! Insulated boxes, lined vacuum-sealed bags, instructions for truffle care and storage. And this is just the indoor work! The hunting, cleaning, weighing and sorting began this morning. We hope everyone is as excited as we are about this year’s gourmet truffle season!
