The Highs and Lows of the South of France!
Whilst staying at our beautiful gite why not visit some of the impressive mountains, deep gorges or the subterranean grottes.
The Pyrenees mountain range, separating France from Spain, forms an imposing barrier, stretching in a continuous line between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, spanning over some 430 km. The highest peak on the French side is the Pic de Vignemale at 3298 m. Just as remarkable is the Pic du Midi at 2577m high, which offers an incredible panorama over the Pyrenees mountains and the Pays de Bigorre. At the top of the Pic is a science observatory that is open to the public.
Over time, the River Aude, hurtling down the slopes of the Pyrenees from its source in the Carlit massif in Pyrénées-Orientales, has carved deep gorges in the rock. This is particularly the case in Pyrenean Piedmont, close to the village of Axat, in the department of Aude, where you can admire the Pierre-Lys pass, to the north of Axat, and the Saint-Georges gorges, to the south of Axat. These two natural sites are remarkably good for whitewater sports like rafting, kayak, canorafting and hydrospeed.
Grotte de l'Aguzou The Aguzou Cave is listed and protected. Tours are arranged in mini-groups for a whole or half day. Equipment provided: helmet, light, overalls. Packed lunches. Tours subject to reservation throughout the year.
