Next in our places to visit series we give you 'Carriere de Marbre Rouge du Roy' or more commonly known as our local marble quarry. Caunes is famous for its Red & White marble which has been used for monuments, grand houses and palaces all over the world - most famously the Palace of Versaille. Caunes also has another quarry where you find the slightly less ostentatious grey marble, there is also a sculpture park which is well worth and visit and boasts examples of previous years entries into the annual Marble Symposium which is held every September. There are fabulous local walks which take you to all these beautiful places and when you are done you can visit our very own Eco Musee where you can find out all about Caunes marble history. You can even take home some local marble souvenirs which are sold from several local outlets.

In our Winter series of things to see and do in and around Caunes, I would now like to introduce you to fabulous places to eat! After all travel is designed to broaden the mind and the palette right? Caunes is very fortunate to have 7 local restaurants all of which offer something a little different.

So we start with one of our personal favourites - L'Atelier, run by Dutch couple Marcel & Petra this little gem is definitely worth a visit during your stay. A lovely, intimate setting in the heart of the medieval village, they offer local, seasonal, produce and there is always an Indonesian dish on offer too for those who prefer a bit of spice. Above all else everything is always cooked with love. Marcel's knowledge obtained from 30+ years in the wine industry shines through, whilst he pours you a glass ( or two!) of excellent local wine he can also provide a mini-biography of the person that grew that grape, the connection to their producers and suppliers is outstanding.

We are so very lucky here in Caunes to have events running throughout the year. Last weekend was the 2nd edition of Arts Di Vins, a programme of events ranging from a walk through the village learning the history of its buildings and people, wine tastings in the Cloister, a guided tour of the Abbey and a Harp recital.

This week we said goodbye to our penultimate guests of the 2024 season aka Nicolas & Chinah and their 3 very well behaved dogs, but not before posing for our . They were an absolute delight to host and we hope they will return next year.

We were back on the walking trail this week after some weeks hiatus and we were lucky enough to be able to explore the Capitelles of Conques-sur-Orbiel, a collection of stone built shelters dating from the late 1800's. After the advent of the second republic in 1848 everyone dreamed of becoming a landowner however the poorest who had nothing, started to clear the scrubland around the outer edges of Conques and started to grow vines this continued until the first world war when pests destroyed the French vine and the majority of the men went off to war and there was no one left to manage the land. They are now looked after by a group of volunteers and there are numerous walking routes to enable history lovers to see and explore these magnificent structures.
