The spirit of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games comes to Chamonix this weekend!

One hundred years ago, Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games and in just a couple of days time, on World Olympic Day on Sunday 23rd June, Chamonix will celebrate the return of the Olympic flame.

Although the flame did pass through Chamonix on the way to the Grenoble 1968 and Turin 2006 Winter Olympics, this is the first time the summer flame has been to the town.

There will be plenty of ways to celebrate as the makes its way through the resort on this “Journee Olympique”

From 2pm to 6pm there will be a chance to take part in a run range of sporting activities, including a ‘firefighter’s course’, bobsleigh pushing, air rifle shooting and martial arts. That all takes place at the sports arena.

On World Olympic Day, 23 June 2024, Chamonix will welcome the torch-bearers . The lighting of the cauldron will take place at Place Mont Blanc.

The celebration site is free and open to all from 3.30pm to 7.45pm at the following address: PLACE DU MONT BLANC, 74400
CHAMONIX

The sun is shining again at Chalet Couttet!

When summer hits Chamonix, temperatures can soar above 30ºC.

With that in mind, here’s a quick rundown of some of the more refreshing activities you can partake in on those hot days.

To escape the heat, go high. There’s no hiding from the sun up there but higher altitudes mean lower temperatures, and you could do worse than a trip to one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Alps.

The Aiguille du Midi is the highest point that can be accessed by cable car in the Chamonix Valley. The station stands at 3,842m and is situated directly across from Mont Blanc. This is the closest most non-climbers can get to Mont Blanc and offers unrivalled views of the massif, the glaciers and the Chamonix Valley, not to mention a large chunk of the Alps and surrounding countries.

If you’re willing to travel a little further down the valley, Lac Passy is a fantastic place to swim, fish, or just hang out and cool off in the shade.

The biggest lake in the Mont-Blanc valley, Lac Passy offers a wide array of water-based activities such as windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding and an inflatable water park for kids.

Of course, you could also lounge in the pool all day at Chalet Couttet!

This is Chalet Couttet!

Couttet is one of the most famous family names in the Chamonix Valley.

The road on which Chalet Couttet is located is named after a respected Chamonix mountain guide, Benoit Couttet. Born in 1877, Benoit lived in the Chamonix valley and grew up climbing the majestic peaks which grace the skyline in front of Chalet Couttet. At 18, Benoit was already a porter for the expeditions which trekked up the steep slopes of Mont Blanc.

By the time Benoit became a guide aged 25, Chamonix already had an established ‘Compagnie des Guides’. Benoit became president of the association from 1929 to 1937. The Couttet family were involved in mountaineering right from the start, their trips also included travelling with famous writer and artists of the day as they ascended the slopes of Mont Blanc, including John Ruskin who was escorted by Joseph Couttet in 1849.

The family also owned and ran the Grand Hotel Couttet where budding mountaineers and gentlemen climbers lodged back at the turn of the century. More stories and hand drawn pictures of the family can be seen in the book Chamonix Guides en Tête, kept in the lounge at Chalet Couttet.

Le Panoramique Restaurant, Mer de Glace

With the Mer de Glace below you and a stunning vista of snow-capped mountains all around, it’s no surprise why this restaurant is called Le Panoramique.

Nestled at the far end of the train stop, this restaurant offers seating inside as well as outdoors. Inside it’s styled in the theme of a dairy, with large picture windows along one side.

Outside there’s a huge semi-circular terrace which is open in summer, from where you can watch skiers and mountaineers head along the glacier and around the mountains surrounding you.

On the menu you’ll find lots of regional specialities, served in glass jars, on slates or in casserole dishes. A children’s menu is also available and there’s a good wine list to accompany your food.

Any one else just not QUITE ready to let go of the festive season yet? 🥲

Some people in France throw out the tree on December 26th, others keep it until closer to the end of January, but the day of ‘Epiphany’, January 6, is traditional.

Have you still got your tree up or do you prefer a fresh start to the new year?

“Il fait un froid de loup.”

🐺❄️

It makes a Wolf cold.

This informal expression has an interesting backstory that takes us to the east of France, near the Alps, in the former region of Franche-Comté.

It’s said that ‘un froid le loup’ is a reference to the special twiles à loups (“wolf tiles”) that covered the roofs of houses there.

Legend goes that when the winds came in from the North, these tiles would whistle and crackle, signaling to the shepherds that both winter and wolves were on their way and it was time to retrieve the sheep from their grazing grounds and take shelter.

In Scotland we have the phrase “coorie doon” which means to cuddle up with blankets and get cosy, ideally next to a fire!

We might say Chalet Couttet is the best place to “coorie doon” in all of Chamonix!

Listen to the fire crackle, enjoy some red wine and gaze out at the enigmatic Mt Blanc as you unwind.
