A varied long weekend with trips to Switzerland, Italy and a day here in France.

Great to be out skiing with the repeat offenders again. And thanks to aspirant guide for the lead and tail guiding 🤝

Type 2 fun on the suffer sticks last night, racing the Verte a l’Envers race at Les Houches.

Good to be out on the uphill only local races again. I feel very out of practice, but now well motivated for some proper training again. Time for some intervals.

Highlight of the evening was the beer and food afterwards in the salle Kandahar. Lots of friends, good food and banter (in French, so I understood 70%… pretty sure they weren’t talking about me 🫣)

Avalanche training for the aspirants in La Grave this week.

Lots of talking, digging and practicing.
Topics included advanced transceiver search techniques, snow profile recording and interpretation, strategic mindset, avalanche case studies and multiple burial rescue exam.

An absolute pleasure working with a strong and motivated team of soon to be guides.

Back on the skinny skis for a catch up (in more ways than one) with Nuno.

Nice jaunt up Mont Joly, with fun skiing and 5 start views. Lots of future projects to tick off in this area.

Over the past several winters, I’ve gotten quite good at snatching ski outings in and around family time, guiding and work admin.

Although short, sometimes these little micro adventures have been super memorable and today was definitely one of those days.

I had a two hour window between ski club drop off and pickup, plus a little extra buffer. I wanted a workout, and some powder so started skinning into the Lac Blanc area, passing one skier in front of me and then pushing the track up to col Belvedere. The ski down was fantastic, even on narrow toothpick skis and I was back in plenty of time and even got another lap in with the mini-Bradford.

When you’re expecting little, to get such a good ski was sweet 😎 A 1000m cardio workout, followed by 1200m of first tracks down ⛷️

Pretty thin cover up there, but quite a bit to ski, and some folk venturing off-piste and short tours.

Last weekend I ran, and suffered, the SainteLyon race.
Apparently France’s oldest trail race, it has an infamous 11:30pm start and attracts thousands of runners.
Easily the biggest and most competitive race I’ve ever done.

82km, 2300m D+ on a mix of trail, 4x4 track and tarmac.

It is pretty hard to run fast in the dark. It feels speedy, but when you look at the watch or the splits the reality is quite different.

I am, as is often the case, slightly frustrated with my time/performance, but it has stoked the fire for some training through the winter before the spring:)

But having said that, I can’t wait for winter to start properly and the skiing to begin 😊

An adventurous couple of days based out of the Moiry hut “winter room”. Climbing ice on the glacier and then the Pigne la lé the second day.

We had the whole mountain to ourselves, which was a pretty amazing introduction to mountaineering for the Canadian lads. And my culinary skills at the hut made the other occupants jealous, so it must’ve been alright 🍽️

As the summer season is finishing (although we’re climbing right through the autumn) we’re reflecting on the summer season and planning 2025.

We had plenty of trips on a variety of routes and styles including the Trois Monts, Gouter route, Grand Mulet and single push ascents from Les Houches.

Some teams were unlucky with the weather, and others fortunate to catch a good window. That’s always the gamble with the higher peaks, and we enjoyed some good “plan B” climbing anyway 🙂

Next year we have trips scheduled for June, July and September. Plus some single push ascents in June for those endurance machines out there.

A nice day hiking and scrambling Pointe Percée via the Sallanches chimneys, with the ever on-form Catrin.

Quite snowy and icy on the shady side. And a bit breezy on the summit, but a great bit of mid alpine cardio before the expected storm this evening.
