Robby Bolleyn exposeert in Galerie Persoon, Eersel, The Netherlands

I had the honour of spending days in the company of this amazing personality, Juma Mole, a fisherman in Zanzibar.
A face characterised by the harsh, hard life conditions on the Indian Ocean.
I have empathised with his world, spent nights on his boat during his fishing operations, been seasick during storms, but felt and understood his life.
And this was an amazing journey for me …
A journey of the soul!
I was deeply touched by his stories of surviving in difficult living conditions.
And even though the 'cultural differences' between the two of us, we found each other on a level of friendship, respect and gratitude in each other's company without racial boundaries ...
In the hearts of these wonderful people, there is room for mutual understanding even if we live in totally different worlds, religions and circumstances.
Sitting on an Arab dhow, watching an amazing sunset with the connection of a new friendship between the two of us, we shared each other’s life stories.
And the magic in this connection was that we learnt so much from each other.
In very rare moments, I get reproaches from people who see me as a 'colonial' earning my income by portraying and exhibiting people without their permission!
Unfortunately, these people have no idea of what goes on behind the scenes.
I always consult with the village elders about what I can mean to their community.
This manifests itself in a financial contribution to help them in financing their vital needs.
And they embrace me with an incredible form of gratitude … a kind of gratitude that I have hardly encountered in our Western world!
