We have just come across this audio guide to help you discover the history of Couches. We would suggest treating the Château de Couches as a separate visit, a short walk up a quiet road from the house. They do their own audio tours in several languages and it’s well worth a visit.

You can walk into Couches along a wooded track. It’s about a 3.5 km circular route and allows you to see all the various historical sites and get a coffee and croissant in the square!

For those of you who are visiting the region because of the wonderful wines, the annual Ronde du Couchois is not to be missed. Four small local towns, of which Couches is one, hold wine tastings at various venues over a weekend (6-7 August 2022).

You simply purchase a glass for €5 and then sample as many wines as you wish. Lots of venues offer delicious snacks as well.

You will need a designated driver if you plan to venture to all the venues but Couches has several, including the Chateau de Couches, and it's only a short walk away and all downhill on the way home!! 🍷

The annual Ronde du Couchois is a local tradition that is really worth a visit if you're staying with us in early August.

Four small local towns, of which Couches is one, host various wine tasting events. You simply purchase a special glass then visit as many venues as you wish and sample their wares. This year the event is on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August.

Many places serve delicious snacks as well. You will need a designated driver if you wish to visit all four but the Chateau de Couches is only a short walk (and its all downhill on the way home!!)

This wine festival day is a wonderful way to taste the regional wines and be entertained by fire eaters, stilt walkers etc.
Thé cep in question is the vine, not to be confused with the mushroom as we did in our first year! You pay €5 for a glass then sample as many wines as you wish. Apologies to the designated driver

The Friday market is back in Couches. A chance to stock up on some delicious regional produce, enjoy a coffee in the square followed by lunch or a picnic? There is a lovely footpath through the woods above the house to reach Couches if you prefer to walk there

Couches is enjoying some beautiful weather, 27-28oC. We’re lucky enough to be here ourselves this week to give everywhere some TLC before the summer season begins. Wine, cheese and swimming obligatory of course.

Those of you who know me will know I love open water swimming. France has an abundance of swimming lakes and clean rivers to enjoy. There are some beautiful, large lakes in the Morvan, a little way north of the house but here are a couple closer to home, both within a 20 minute drive.

First is Lac de Nolay which is small but friendly with a campsite close by for a cafe and WC.

The last two photos are the larger Lac De Montaubry in Le Breuil which is a bit wilder with hiking trails around it.

I will report back when I've visited them! But for thise of you who prefer to see the bottom of wherever they are swimming, our pool is looking good, the new air source heater is very efficient and it's only 30 seconds from the house and a cooling beer!

The beautiful Château de Couches is just a 5 minute walk from the house. A beautiful place to visit, they also have a wonderful restaurant and wine tasting room. We will definitely be taking time to visit during our stay next week!

Life in France is returning to normal it seems. This week has been the 21st festival ′′ The nights of Mount Rome’ at nearby St Sernin du plain.

This is an annual weeklong event of live music & theatre held up on the hill Mont Rome with beautiful views as the sun sets, plenty of food and drinks available but booking is required.

So good to see that it is back this year!

To everyone staying at the house this summer, there are some great concerts and theatre events being held locally.
The ones at the Chateau de Couches are a short stroll away and we always love Nuits de Mont Rome.

Although we can’t visit ourselves, our friends have been hard at work getting the house prepared ready for the arrival of the first guests. Everywhere is cleaned and weeded, the pool looks great and the welcome bottles of crémant are in the cellar!
