❄️This week in the 3 Valleys, we've had the AMAZING in Val Thorens, with the riders enjoying the epic powder conditions!

But that's not all... the Women's Alpine Skiing World Cup will take place on the floodlit Stade Émile Allais run in Courchevel 1850 this evening (Thursday 30th) - watch BBC2 this weekend to see the coverage. Will it be Petra Vlhova, last year's champ who takes the title, or Mikaela Shiffrin who has clocked up 6 wins on this run?

AND most importantly, sharing the slopes with the pro skiers this week, the Team Magic have been hitting the powder too! (And enjoying a much deserved drink afterwards 😉)

☀️☁️❄️ This past week we have been lucky enough to see AMAZING scenes of the 'mer de nuages' - a sea of clouds - in the valley below, with the mountain peaks rising up through the fluffy clouds like islands.

It's an incredibly beautiful phenomenon which January skiers are often lucky enough to see.

Our guests must have snapped some great shots this week, as have our team who captured these beauties! 👏

🧐What's the science behind it? This sea of clouds has a more technical name: a temperature inversion.

On cold clear nights, the cold air at ground level drops to below the dew point, so water vapour condenses to create this layer of clouds at ground level. Warmer air sits above the cloud layer, instead of below like it usually would, hence the 'inversion'.

Down in the valley where it's cloudy and misty, with the cold mountain river Doron running below, the trees are all covered in frost, yet up in resort and at the tops of the mountains, we have bright blue skies! Perfect skiing weather... 🏂⛷

Snow Update 15 Jan 2025 - 360º tilt, drag, rotate

High Pressure continues to dominate with lots of sunshine and blue sky but cold, clear skies at night with temperature down to -5°C at resort level. This is keeping pistes in excellent condition with the usual hard pack in heavy traffic areas in late afternoon.

Outlook is for more of the same although outlier models showing a break down possible towards the end of next week - serious weather systems to the North East could bring plenty of snow if they were dragged this way!

All lifts open in Orelle, Mottaret, Méribel, Les Menuires, St Martin and Val Thorens (except for the damaged Cime Caron cable car - access from the other side is fine on the Orelle-Caron gondola).

Courchevel "The World Capital of Skiing" has 2 lifts not running: Coqs (only running in school holidays) and the Gros Murger drag lift which they appear to have given up on.

Saulire snow depth reported as 150cm and Courchevel 1850 resort level as 98cm. Val Thorens highest point is showing at 210cm.

The usual minor lower runs down to St Bon, Les Allues, Le Raffort and Plan du Vah are closed.

Off piste avalanche risk across the 3 Valleys is 3 out of 5 (Considerable Risk).

Since taking over from the Chrome Bar (shortly before Covid hit), the Bistrot Machet in La Tania has become a firm favourite.

It's a lovely place to settle down for a nice lunch, the team are friendly and the food is unfailingly delicious! 😋 And it's also pretty good value, making it well worth a stop if you're skiing from our Meribel or Courchevel Le Praz chalets...

It's the sister bistro restaurant of the Michelin-starred Le Farcon, and with chef Julien Machet at the helm, what's not to like?

Julien is a genuine local who loves nothing more than putting the spotlight on the producers of the Savoyard region. The inspiration for his menus comes from the stories of the well-trodden trade routes which transported ingredients between the Med in the south and the Italian peaks to the east, via our ancient mountains.
