Where is this view??? 🌻

When we have guests in the chateau, or during the winter when heating costs are too high, we move into our loft apartment in one of the outbuildings. It’s a cozy space, and what I love most about it (other than those gorgeous wood beams!) is that we can slide open the doors in our bedroom and wake up to this view! Usually the field in the distance is corn or another crop but this year we have been blessed with these brightly coloured sunflowers. 🌻☀️🌻

Dinner with Maman ❤️ We feel incredibly lucky to have the gorgeous only a 5 minute drive from the chateau. It has become our favourite place to take our family & friends to enjoy a slow & delightful dinner with locally sourced produce and wines. Highly recommended if you are ever in this part of the world. 🤩

Roses, roses, roses! ❤️ Despite the pretty awful weather across France the past week, the roses on the chai have never looked better. And the smell… heavenly. If you happen to notice the ladder - I captured the shot while Sassan and the cable guy were running our NEW FIBRE (woo-hoo!) cables through the attic and all the way into the chateau. It was a very happy day and another project ticked off the list!

Last year we took on our biggest DIY project yet with the creation of a summer kitchen next to the swimming pool. Experiencing for ourselves the relatively long walk from the pool to the main kitchen for refreshments, we wanted to add a space that enhanced the poolside experience. With most of our guests spending their days by the pool, it was not only the kitchen amenities we wanted to provide - a fridge to serve chilled wine and soft drinks, an ice machine to ensure drinks stay fresh, a plancha for impromptu poolside dining - but also a place to provide shade and a space to gather for poolside meals.

For those who can tune into you can follow our journey as we overcame some indecision and challenges that tested our skills in Series 7, episodes 23, 24 & 25 or follow along to see the highlights of the build…

This painting!! 🥰 So here is a story that absolutely melted our hearts…

My niece Gabrielle and her boyfriend Harvey came to visit us in the spring two years ago when we first moved in. They stayed for a week and helped us out as we were scrambling to find our chateau feet and get the place ready for our first official guests. We all enjoyed their time here, split between DIY projects and fun trips to Paris, Agen, Eymet, and Bordeaux. Well yesterday, Harvey surprised Gabrielle with this AMAZING painting that he had secretly been working on… and we love it! Not only how great it looks (well done Harvey!!) and how thoughtful it was for him to paint it, but also to know that our home is a special place for both of them. We love you Gabrielle & Harvey!! ❤️❤️❤️ (Now can we place an order? 😉)

Are you thinking about coming to catch the Tour de France in 2024?? 🚴 Why not combine the Tour with a stay in your own private chateau?

We are so excited that the 2024 course will pass near the chateau - not once but twice! Stage 12 finishes in Villeneuve sur Lot on the 12th July and Stage 13 starts in our neighbouring city of Agen on the 13th July. If you’re a cycling enthusiast or simply a fan of the Tour, why not spend a week exploring the gorgeous rolling hills of the Lot-et-Garonne while you catch a glimpse of star riders like Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel battle it out for the yellow jersey 🚴🚴🏼‍♂️🚴🏼‍♂️🚴

Whether you’re a large family or a group of friends looking for 8, 12, 15 or 18 bedrooms (all ensuite), you will have exclusive use of the chateau and grounds. Book ahead for the 6-13th July or 13-20th July to combine your special holiday with the Tour experience.

Did you catch the first new episode of Chateau DIY at Christmas yesterday? We loved seeing all the other chatelains projects and can’t wait to catch the rest of the series this week!

We had a smaller project to refurbish our 200+ year old front door. With such a beautifully made and likely original door we didn’t want to alter it too much, but it was looking very weathered, dry and in need of some TLC. It would have been very difficult to remove the door, due to its size and the intricate locking mechanisms on the interior, so we simply sanded it in place and applied a few coats of oil to protect it. It’s amazing what a few coats of oil can do to old wood to give it new life 🤩

The wreath was a fun & festive edition to mark the occasion. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! 🎄🤶🏻🎅🏼

Why do rainbows make us happy? 🌈

A few weeks ago, as we were lamenting the onslaught of rain and wondering how we would accomplish all the outdoor chores we had to do, we were greeted by this beautiful and vibrant double rainbow. In an instant, everything seemed a little brighter.

People say that rainbows are a sign of good luck, and who hasn’t conjured up the vision of a leprechaun at one end with a pot of gold!?! Some cultures believe rainbows are a symbol of hope or a sign of a new beginning. Rainbows have also come to represent love and acceptance. Some even believe it’s a sign or a message from a departed loved one. Whatever you believe - hopefully this image brings a smile to your face and delivers a message of hope, love, happiness, acceptance and peace 🌈❤️

One of the most challenging DIY projects we’ve tackled so far on Chateau DIY was giving the pool a facelift.

When we moved in, it was February and we knew if we were going to open for guests that summer, we needed to invest in replacing the pool margelles (coping stones) as they were in a terrible state. We thought it would be fairly straightforward - remove the old ones and put down new ones. But no… nothing around here is ever that easy. The old stones were concrete and where they weren’t broken, they were pretty securely in place. After trying several different methods, we struggled to understand how to remove them without damaging the new pool liner. To make a long story short, we ended up slicing them into small pieces and then lifting them off with a chisel and hammer. It was a mess.

Then came the "fun" of finding replacement margelles. We looked everywhere and found that the size we needed was non-standard. With the clock ticking and a lack of ready made options, we started to panic a little that the pool wouldn’t be ready for the first guests.

In the end, we found a local artisan who could make them for us - at a fraction of the price - and within the timeframe we needed. The relief we felt was palpable!

After replacing the margelles, we needed to clean up the tiles around the pool, find sunloungers and parasols, and take a crash course in pool maintenance, but finally we were ready… ☀️⛱️👙

The back terrace was another fun project that we managed to highlight on last year. Just off the grand salon, we wanted to transform the overgrown and unused space into an extension of the kitchen/dining area. With the double doors leading to the terrace and the picture window above the sink looking out onto the space, it was something we couldn’t wait to do with summer, and our first guests, fast approaching.

The first thing we did was cut back the overgrown shrubs to expose the gorgeous view of the rolling Gascon hills. Little did we know that it would become one of the most enjoyed and photographed views of the property. We then cleared out the old rusty table and broken bench and created a small flower garden in the corner.

The hardest parts of the whole refresh were levelling the ground, installing the w**d protector, and then covering the entire area with fresh stone. The scale of things can’t be underestimated. We originally wanted to put tiles down, but the effort and cost were prohibitive with our timeline so we settled on stone. We also needed to create shade for the outdoor dining tables, so we installed an electric awning. It was then we realised we didn’t have enough lighting outside so we searched for the right fixtures and brought in an electrician to help get things in place.

The final touches were the most satisfying - the hanging pod chairs that caused me some grief when DIY filmed their assembly 😅🥲😂, the two tables my father made for us ❤️, the garden furniture and bright cushions. Although, the pièce de résistance has to be the two leafy trees that create the most impressive shade in the summer months. At night, when it’s warm and the fairy lights are on - it’s become a magical, happy place ❤️

One of my favourite renovation projects so far has been turning our grand salon into a functional kitchen and dining area that can accommodate large groups.

We started by removing the furniture and stripping back the outdated fittings. It was a bit unnerving as there were electricity cables and water pipes running everywhere, but Sassan bravely learned to use a sizeable jackhammer for the first time! Once everything was cleared, we needed to design the new space. First was the wall colour, changing from a peachy / salmon colour to a warmer, more neutral colour. We considered sage green, but landed on a lighter creamy yellow as a more neutral choice.

We spent months looking at kitchen fittings and considered custom oak cabinets, but we were under both cost and time pressure (aren’t we always?!). After countless trips to kitchen suppliers, we weren’t convinced we’d found an option fitting of a chateau. We were about to order a more modern design out of desperation to meet our deadlines when our advisor remembered they had one more option in the back! It was only after installation that I noticed the curve of the cabinet doors matched the Falcon range’s oven doors. The mystery doors were clearly meant to be.

Now to pull everything together - the cream coloured walls, the reddish terracotta tiles, the greenish hue of the new Dekton countertops. When we finally found the perfect tiles, they weren’t in stock. Not to be derailed, we searched and found the same tiles from a Spanish supplier who could get them to us in a few weeks. Phew!

Once the materials and kitchen units were sorted, came the fun of decorating. We found a 5m antique wood table in one of the outbuildings. We sourced copper pots and accessories from local brocantes. We added seating with brocade armchairs and a green velvet canapé set from an estate sale in Bordeaux. We only recently completed the lighting above the island by creating a light fixture from an old wood and iron ladder, rope, copper fittings and some interesting exposed light bulbs.

The grand salon continues to be a work in progress, but hopefully you will agree it is now a more inviting and functional space than before!

If it weren’t for these beautiful white flowers that sprout out of the yucca shrubs in the front of the chateau each year, I think we would have ripped them out by now. Yuccas are not native to France and earlier this year, when I accidentally bumped into one, I had a pretty severe allergic reaction to the toxins that made their way under my skin. But I get such pleasure out of the flowers when they are in bloom, that they are safe where they are - for now!

Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae.[2] Its 40–50 species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers.
