On ne peut comprendre l’idéologie chinoise actuelle du retour à la grandeur ou l’insistance des dirigeants à réclamer le retour d’objets d’art, volés en 1860 et toujours exposés dans les musées étrangers, sans faire un détour par ces épisodes des guerres de l’opium. »

Avec Hong Kar-Wai, lorsque l'on quitte la salle de cinéma, on est toujours persuadé que quoi que feront les personnages par la suite, leurs perceptions, leurs opinions et leurs rapports au monde resteront inchangés. Le voyage initiatique est achevé. Leurs vies peuvent se terminer, cela ne changera rien. C'est peut-être à cet étrange sentiment de satisfaction que l'on reconnaît un bon film.
