TRAVEL NOTES BY JO ~ HOUSE IN THE WILD, KENYA
“House in the Wild is a fantastic owner-run property in the northern reaches of the Mara. It was founded by Tarquin and Lippa Wood, who established the 6,000-acre Enonkishu Conservancy with the goal of rewilding the land for conservation. This is very close to where I worked during my time in Kenya, and it truly is one of the most beautiful corners of the Mara.
As travel specialists, it’s crucial that we support camps and lodges that are actively working to protect the land surrounding Africa’s National Reserves—without these conservancies, the reserves themselves wouldn’t survive. House in the Wild is one of only two members of the Long Run Organisation in the Maasai Mara. The Long Run is a highly respected initiative that helps properties worldwide achieve sustainability through the 4Cs: Conservation, Community, Commerce, and Culture.
What makes this property truly special is its conservation-first approach, which plays a vital role in protecting the greater Mara ecosystem—essential for the survival of the National Reserve. It’s a true eco-tourism success story.
Beyond the incredible wildlife and conservation work, House in the Wild offers a fantastic variety of activities, which is quite rare in the Mara. You can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, cycling, village and school visits, explore the Mara Training Centre, visit the bead project, and even go horse riding—though for this, you’ll need to be an experienced rider, as you’ll be riding amongst big game!”
Tomorrow take a look at their new exclusive use villa...

Few experiences rival witnessing the Great Migration from above. Soar over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon, where two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles make their dramatic and dangerous trek. A champagne breakfast in the heart of the plains afterwards adds a luxurious touch to this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
