Did you know there is a Roman bridge in Marseille? 🏛️
Known locally as the “Vieux Pont” or the “Pont Romain” of Saint-Marcel, in the 11th district of Marseille, is it relatively unknown 🌉
It was built in 49 BC by Julius Caesar’s army during his siege of Marseille, as part of his civil war against Pompey 🧨
It was partially destroyed by the Saracens in the 7th century, leaving only the columns. It was replaced by a wooden bridge, before the double arch bridge we see today was constructed by the viscounts of Marseille in the Medieval period 🏰
Pedestrians could use the bridge to cross the l’Huveaune river (which still flows under it today) until the beginning of the 20th century 🚶♂️
Today it is at risk of collapsing and is in need of urgent repair ‼️

From the Frioul islands in the bay of Marseille you get magnificent views of the city.
Here we have the Chateau d’If in the middle-ground and the basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde in the distance 🏰

Today marks the anniversary of Operation Sultan: the evacuation of the Saint-Jean neighbourhood, located on the northern side of the Old Port of Marseille in 1943.
Here we can see some of the 20,000 people that were removed from their homes by the French and German forces.
They are standing on the northern quai with their furniture and belongings.

Have you been to La Belle de Mai? 🖼️ The neighbourhood in the third district of Marseille, next to the Saint Charles train station has lots to offer 🚂 The CCR, Centre of Conservation and Resources is located at 1 rue Clovis Hugues. You can sign-up for a free visit of the reserves every first Tuesday of the month at 2 pm. With over 1 million objects it is a truly fascinating place! 🎭 Across the road you will find the Municipal Archives at 10 rue Clovis Hugues. The latest exhibition (4th May - 27th Sept.) called “Champion” is all about sport. It’s free to enter and is open Tuesdays to Fridays 9 am - 12 pm and 1 pm to 5 pm 🏀 Down the road you will find La Friche, an old tobacco factory turned cultural centre full of art exhibitions, book shop, antique shop, café, restaurant, skate park, play area and much much more.
