✨Science Insight ✨ On August 16, Planet Labs launched their hyperspectral satellite Tanager-1 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 🚀. Unistellar & SETI Institute scientists have been working with Planet Labs to see how Tanager-1’s brightness changed since the launch via data from Unistellar observers. Watch it zip past in this recent observation from citizen astronomer Petri K in Finland! Among other goals, this satellite will monitor methane emissions on Earth, and the Unistellar Network will continue to monitor it from the ground. 🔭 Citizen Scientists Discover a Warm Jupiter with NASA's! 🔭

Exciting news for our UNISTELLAR Community! Two NASA-funded teams, UNITE and Exoplanet Watch, have teamed up to confirm the discovery of a new exoplanet, a "warm Jupiter" named TIC 393818343 b (aka TOI 6883 b). This discovery showcases the power of citizen science, where amateur astronomers, including a high school student, contributed to real astronomical research.

Key Points:
- Collaboration: These teams used backyard telescopes to observe and confirm the transit of this exoplanet, demonstrating that with the right tools (like those from UNISTELLAR!), anyone can contribute to space science.

- The Planet: TIC 393818343 b orbits closer to its star than Jupiter does to our Sun, earning it the "warm Jupiter" title. Its discovery adds to our understanding of planetary systems beyond our own.

- Publication: This work has been published world's leading multidisciplinary science journal Nature with some of our UNISTELLAR Community members as co-authors (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-07688-3)

- Inspiration: Darren Rivett from Australia, one of our citizen Scientist, expressed his amazement at contributing to scientific discovery, showing how accessible and rewarding astronomy can be.

Cosmic Collaborations: The SETI Institute Works With UNISTELLAR to Bring Telescopes Everywhere 🔭🌏

In a joint effort to expand our understanding of the cosmos and inspire global cooperation, the SETI Institute, UNISTELLAR, Astronomers Without Borders (AWB), and AstroSandbox have partnered up to provide smart telescopes to astronomy advocates across the globe. These collaborations aim to unite the expertise of SETI's renowned scientists with extensive networks of amateur astronomers and outreach programs, creating a synergy that will push the boundaries of space exploration and education.
The SETI Institute and UNISTELLAR have already donated four UNISTELLAR telescopes to AWB National Coordinators in Brazil, Colombia, Kosovo, and Nepal to help empower their outreach efforts. More donations of EQUINOX 1 telescopes are already in preparation while current recipients are already seeing the effects.

🎉 Another publication in Nature! 🎉

We are proud to announce the publication of another paper in Nature, featuring contributions from several citizen scientists within our UNISTELLAR Community! The research focuses on the discovery of a hot-Jupiter progenitor, TIC 241249530 b, which is on a super-eccentric retrograde orbit. This unique planet, monitored by TESS and followed up with ground-based observations, provides key insights into the formation and migration of giant exoplanets. Congratulations to everyone involved in this stellar achievement! 🌟🚀🔭

Today, as we celebrate July 4th, a day of independence and unity, let's also marvel at the wonders of the universe that unite us all. From the vastness of space to the intricacies of our own solar system, astronomy teaches us about the beauty of exploration and discovery.

Did you know that on July 4th, 2005, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft made history by successfully colliding with Comet Tempel 1, providing valuable insights into the composition of comets? This event marked a milestone in our exploration of celestial bodies beyond Earth. A few years later, from their backyards, the UNISTELLAR Citizen Astronomers Patrice Huet, Matthieu Limagne, and Bruno Payet from Reunion Island, on the Eastern coast of Africa, captured the moment of impact of the DART mission, including the brief flash that signaled a successful hit.

As we gather under the stars tonight, take a moment to reflect on how far we've come in our understanding of the cosmos and how much more there is to explore.
