Charmelieu is located in the quaint winemaking village of Meursault amidst Burgundy’s most renowned vineyards and wineries. In 2005 the 200-year old house was completely renovated, retaining exposed wood beams, oak floors and stone fireplaces, while modernizing the kitchen and bathrooms. A short walk through vineyards by an ambling stream, ancient stone walls and estates, views of surrounding vill

ages and endless rows of grapevines are breathtaking. Only a five minute walk to the center of town, Meursault has several wineries open for tastings, restaurants, shops, two bakeries, a grocer, butcher and bank. Charmelieu has a private courtyard, two large master bedrooms with private bathrooms, a spacious kitchen and dining area and large living room with ample seating. The first master bedroom has a queen bed and an alcove with a bunk bed. The loft master bedroom has a queen bed and two twin beds. Both master bathrooms have full-size showers (one with a bathtub and one with an oversized standing shower) and heated towel racks. There is a half bath and pullout couch in the living room. Each room has remote-controlled central heating and air conditioning. Private chef, wine tastings, and restaurant/sightseeing recommendations are available.

Bottling the 2014 white Burgundies at the winery in Meursault with the help of Jon Alexander. Look for these wines to be imported to the U.S. later this summer.

Escargot anyone? Michael is in Burgundy this week bottling wine for Maison Shaps and getting the house (Charmelieu) ready for guests and look who's hanging out on his front gate. If you're pining for an amazing wine & food experience, visit Burgundy, France, home of escargot and boeuf bourguignon. You can stay in Michael's house and drink his wines. What could be better?!

Michael just returned from a busy week at the house--he bought furniture, a new fridge (large American-style!), hung paintings, got ready for bottling and enjoyed the beautiful warm weather. The girls and I leave one month from today for a month-long adventure. Can't wait to see the all the improvements and enjoy the quaint French village of Meursault.

Below is an email from our first guest since we bought out our French partners (and made many improvements to the house). Read what she had to say about her visit two weeks ago:

Oh Christie, I owe you a huge thank you for the most memorable vacation ever! I was going to sit down and send you an email today, I feel like my brain is still in France, it is so tough being back home. Your house was the highlight of the trip, it truly was perfect.

We walked in the door and instantly felt at home, so warm and cozy especially since the weather was cold. The floor plan is perfect, more than enough room for 2 couples, the split levels makes for so much privacy and the rooms are all so spacious. Everything is furnished to perfection and your choice of paint colors couldn't have been better. There was everything there we could possibly need and then some.

We walked into town every morning to get pastries, had wonderful breakfasts around your kitchen table! We did call and arrange a bike tour from a pamphlet we found at the house, met the guide in Beaune and he was shocked that we showed up because it was snowing. The most exciting bike ride ever, rode through the snow through vineyards and stopped at a winery owned by a mother and son who had a roaring fire going in the fireplace and even baked us fresh cheese puffs, it will be a memory we will all carry forever.

We did spend some time in Beaune, took a long walk through the vineyards in Meursault, they were completing their pruning and burning their clipping in those amazing barrels that push around the vineyard. Amazing to see the soil types as you climb up the hills, it now makes sense to me when people talk about "minerality" in wine.

We ate 2 dinners in Meursault which were both wonderful, one was the one with the deer heads of various types on the wall [called Le Chevreuil], fantastic! Natalie was great, we had one evening when the power went out, we had the washer and dryer on and her husband came out quickly and flipped the fuse and all was well.

I can't imagine what you could do to improve anything, it was perfect and we thank you so much! Thanks Michael for the wine, what a nice welcome and so delicious! Talk to you soon, and thanks for the memories, Amy

Christie & Michael Shaps are proud to announce the relaunching of their line of French wines and takeover of the adjacent rental house called Charmelieu (meaning charming place). Originally founded in 2004 with a French partner, the winery and house are moving forward under the Shaps’ leadership. Backed by investors, the Shaps purchased the winery and attached rental house in November 2012 from their French partner and are currently undergoing major renovations and improvements to the house and winery.

Located in Meursault, one of Burgundy’s most renowned winemaking villages, Maison Shaps is a garage-ist style winery, focusing on small vineyard lots from some of Burgundy’s most famous vineyard sites (Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault Premier Cru, Les Charmes, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Chaponniers, Vosne–Romanée, and Gevery-Chambertin to name a few). These artisanal-style wines are imported by USA Wine Imports in New York and Williams Corner Wines in Virginia. The 200-year old former vineyard workers' house is rented to vacationers looking for the quintessential French experience (visit www.flipkey.com/meursault-vacation-rentals/p442788/
for more information).
