🕍Saint-Pierre became a cathedral in 1536 when the archbishopric of Maguelone was transferred to Montpellier. It was originally the chapel of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Benoît.
A must-see is the porch, an imposing baldachin supported by enormous circular pillars 4.55 m in diameter that once bore the coat of arms of Urban V, who studied and taught in Montpellier, then became bishop before being elected pope in Avignon (1362).
A fine example of southern Gothic architecture, it is the only medieval church in the Ecusson to have survived the Wars of Religion.

De visita obligada es el pórtico, un imponente baldaquino sostenido por enormes pilares circulares de 4,55 m de diámetro que en su día lució el escudo de armas de Urbano V, que estudió y enseñó en Montpellier, y luego fue obispo antes de ser elegido Papa en Aviñón (1362).

Es un bello ejemplo de arquitectura gótica meridional y la única iglesia medieval del Ecusson que sobrevivió a las Guerras de Religión.

🕍The neo-Gothic church of Saint Roch is located in the heart of Montpellier and was built in the 19th century. Saint Roch has been venerated by the people of Montpellier since the late Middle Ages. Known the world over, this saint is also the patron saint of pilgrims and the protector of the plague.

The present-day church of Saint-Roch was partly built on the site occupied by the church of Saint-Paul and the Trinitaires convent before the French Revolution.

⛪️La iglesia neogótica de Saint Roch está situada en el corazón de Montpellier y fue construida en el siglo XIX. San Roque es venerado por los habitantes de Montpellier desde finales de la Edad Media. Conocido en todo el mundo, este santo es también el patrón de los peregrinos y el protector de la peste.
La actual iglesia de Saint-Roch se construyó en parte en el lugar que ocupaban la iglesia de Saint-Paul y el convento de las Trinitarias antes de la Revolución Francesa.

❤The 280th edition of the Saint-Louis festival takes place from 22 to 27 August 2024. Jousts, tributes, musical entertainment... the whole history of this unique island will be in the spotlight for six days.
Every year in August, the traditional Saint-Louis festival is the major local event, featuring the inevitable jousting tournaments and parades, as well as a host of festive and cultural events.
📌The festival has been held since the port of Sète was founded on 29 July 1666.

❤La 280 edición del festival de Saint-Louis se celebra del 22 al 27 de agosto de 2024. Justas, homenajes, espectáculos musicales... toda la historia de esta isla única estará en el candelero durante seis días.
Cada año, en el mes de agosto, la tradicional fiesta de Saint-Louis es el gran acontecimiento local, con sus inevitables torneos de justas y desfiles, así como un sinfín de actos festivos y culturales.
📌La fiesta se celebra desde la fundación del puerto de Sète, el 29 de julio de 1666.

⛲️🩺The Hôtel Saint Côme was built between 1751 and 1757 by architect Jean-Antoine Giral with funds bequeathed by François Gigot de Lapeyronie to serve as an amphitheatre for the College of Surgery.

In accordance with Giral's wishes, the building was modelled on the amphitheatre of Saint Côme de Paris, making it ‘more perfect if possible’. It consists of two buildings separated by a courtyard. One is octagonal on the outside and contained an amphitheatre for anatomy demonstrations (now the Salle Lapeyronie), while the other originally housed the rooms used for surgeons' assemblies.

⛲️🩺El Hôtel Saint Côme fue construido entre 1751 y 1757 por el arquitecto Jean-Antoine Giral con fondos legados por François Gigot de Lapeyronie para servir de anfiteatro al Colegio de Cirugía.

De acuerdo con los deseos de Giral, el edificio fue modelado sobre el anfiteatro de Saint Côme de París, haciéndolo «más perfecto si cabe». Consta de dos edificios separados por un patio. Uno es octogonal en el exterior y contenía un anfiteatro para las demostraciones de anatomía (actual sala Lapeyronie), mientras que el otro albergaba originalmente las salas destinadas a las asambleas de los cirujanos.

🎭Montpellier's Opéra Comédie, which closes the square of the same name, is a true Italian-style theatre with decorations, gilding and draperies, built in the 18th century but damaged several times by fire. It took on its definitive appearance at the end of the 19th century. Excluding Parisian establishments, it is the largest Italian-style theatre in France after Bordeaux.

We were lucky enough to take Nina's street art tour (in French) and we heartily recommend it to anyone who understands the language.

L'Arbre Blanc, a signature building that needs no introduction. At the foot of the Arbre Blanc, a gallery dedicated to contemporary African art opened its doors to the city and the world.
