In memoriam ...
The saddest day in Nice’s recent history will be commemorated with a day of moving ceremonies starting at the Villa Massena at 10am in front of the memorial. Later that afternoon at 4pm, the French President Emmanuel Macron will speak. At 6pm at Place Massena a ceremony honoring the police, fire fighters, The Red Cross, and other civil servants that intervened that fateful night. Later in the evening at 9:30pm in Promenade du Paillon gardens, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nice and the choir of the Nice Opera will present a concert in memory of the 86 victims. Then at 10:55pm the families of the victims will gather at the the beach where they will release 86 floating lamps into the sky.

Music Day, La Fête de la Musique’ is a free public festival that takes place throughout France each year on June 21st, the first day of the summer.

The celebration took off in 1982 with Minister of Culture Jack Lang. It has continued to be popular among the French and has spread to hundreds of other countries around the world.

‘Fête de la Musique’ is a homophone of ‘Faites de la musique’ (make some music), which is the slogan used to encourage all musicians, amateur and professional, to perform on the streets.

Many concerts are organized as well and the public can thus enjoy all genres of music for free, as it is required by the department of the Ministry of Culture.

This day of the year is an occasion to enjoy the summer out, with good food, drink and merrymaking.
