These regal heads, once part of Notre-Dame Cathedral's Gallery of the Kings, were vandalized during the French Revolution. Meant to depict the biblical Kings of Judah, their similarity to French kings made them a target. Lost for almost 200 years, they were rediscovered in a Paris garden in 1977. Although made to be seen from afar, today at the Cluny Museum visitors can get up close to see their original paint (polychromy). Imagine how the cathedral facade must have looked covered in color!-With your Paris Muse guide, you'll discover an entire gallery devoted to sculptures from Notre-Dame Cathedral. It's just one highlight in the Cluny's fascinating collection, spanning Antiquity, the Middle Ages, to the Renaissance. Join us for Medieval Masterpieces At The Cluny Museum - 1.5 hour private tour

The Cluny is the unsung hero of Paris museums, and an oasis away from the tourist crowds. In the heart of the Latin Quarter, the remains of a Roman bath—one of the finest surviving examples of Roman architecture in the city—are joined to a Gothic Abbey. On it own, this historically hybrid building would be worth a visit. But the fact that it also houses a stunning collection of art from a 1,000-year period of medieval history makes it a must-see visit for your next trip to Paris!-Join us for Medieval Masterpieces At The Cluny Museum - 1.5 hour private tour with Paris Muse

The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries at the Musée de Cluny are celebrated as one of the great masterpieces of Western art. Five of the tapestries depict the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) while the meaning of the sixth, entitled À Mon Seul Désir ("To My Only Desire"), remains unclear.
-
The tapestries combine a captivating blend of classical symbolism, attention to nature, and a medieval world view. They offer a glimpse into the cultural sensibilities of the late Middle Ages.

This year, at the Venice Biennale (now through Nov 24, 2024) France is represented by the contemporary artist and poet Julien Creuzet. Jimerson takes France 24 viewers on a journey through Creuzet's immersive installation in the French Pavilion, where the worlds of nature, culture, and imagination merge. This year's Biennale’s theme— "Foreigners Everywhere”—deeply resonates with Creuzet’s work.

The artist’s Martinican roots play a central role in his explorations of cultural hybridity, migration, and the history of colonialism. In this segment, Jimerson highlights the many references in Creuzet’s current Venice installation to the landscapes of Martinique, Parisian monuments, and myth, inviting viewers to reflect on the experiences of belonging to multiple worlds.

Dr. Lauren Jimerson is an art historian specializing in early 20th-century European art. Her recent book Painting Her Pleasure, explores three trailblazing women artists who shook up the Paris art world.

What's your favorite place in Paris? Paris Muse guide Marta-Volga de Minteguiaga-Guezala tells us: " As obvious as it might be, the Louvre! I feel lucky to work in this amazing building, exploring its history and incredible works inside. I feel at home there."-Marta grew up in France in a Spanish family. She studied Fine Arts in Madrid, and then Art History at the University of Paris, Sorbonne, where she earned her Master’s degree in 2002. Her interest in art materials led to her first job, as a printer for artists in an etching workshop. But her primary career has been as a curator, for exhibitions at the Picasso museums in both Barcelona and Málaga, Spain.

Join us in welcoming Paméla Petitot to our guide team! Born and raised in Paris, Paméla studied art history at the École du Louvre and at the Sorbonne, where she majored in archaeology. She worked on several excavations in France and Uzbekistan. For a few years, she travelled the world, exploring sites from American deserts to Himalayan mountains. Back home in Paris, she decided on a career in guiding, which allows her to share her city and her passion for learning.-"I see my role as a messenger, helping visitors hear (and see) what a work of art has to say—and it’s usually quite a bit! With our small groups at Paris Muse, that always sparks a dynamic conversation."

To celebrate today's opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics, we salute iconic athletes of the past! Milo of Croton was a legendary six-time Olympic wrestling champion in late-6th century BC Greece. His strength and determination was immortalized by the French artist Pierre Puget in this dramatic sculpture now at the Louvre. May his example continue to inspire athletes who are striving for greatness in the face of adversity this summer!

Color can be a be a breath of fresh air. We felt exactly that way on a recent visit to Rosy Lamb's studio in the Paris neighborhood of Montparnasse. Her bright and airy loft shimmers with all kinds of brilliant color, from the sun’s reflections to the palettes of her stunning paintings and sculptures. When Rosy talks about her experiences as a working artist, you get a sense of her passion as an art educator, too. This, and her playful sense of discovery, is what inspired Rosy to create a new kind of artist-led activity-based tour, so that even visitors with little to no art-making experience can feel engaged by what artists do everyday. Check out the full story behind Rosy's new tour—Explore Modern Art: CoColor for Families—on our blog.

Dr. Lauren Jimerson, an art historian specializing in early 20th-century European art, is the author of Painting Her Pleasure, a book exploring three trailblazing women artists who revolutionized the Paris art world.

Russian artist Marie Vassilieff (1884-1957) was a pioneering member of the early 20th-century Parisian avant-garde. She studied with Matisse and befriended artists like Modigliani, Chagall, and Léger. Vassilieff's unique response to Cubism explored themes of androgyny and non-binary representation. Her relentless pursuit of innovation was evident in her art as well as in her daring, unconventional life.

Dr. Lauren Jimerson is an art historian specializing in early 20th-century European art. Her recent book Painting Her Pleasure, explores three trailblazing women artists who shook up the Paris art world.

One of those artists, Suzanne Valadon (1863-1938) is celebrated for her candid depictions of the n**e, which sharply differ from works by her male peers. Largely neglected for a half-century and overshadowed by her son, the painter Maurice Utrillo, Valadon is finally receiving the attention she deserves with recent exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Metz and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

Learn more about Valadon, from her humble beginning as an artist’s model in Montmartre, to her daring rise within the ranks of the Parisian avant-garde.

We have to share some amazing feedback from recent Paris Muse visitors, raving about Madeline’s new Find Your Scent in the Marais tour: -“Our guide Madeline took us through what I can best describe as a journey through scents. Her relationships at the Marais boutiques and in some cases the "noses" of each niche brand gave us learning opportunities throughout. Madeline's personality, her knowledge, and her passion elevate this to a world-class experience. Of all the things we did in Paris (including seeing Taylor Swift, a private boat tour on the Seine, and eating at David Toutain), this experience remains my overall favorite.
-
Madeline, your fanbase is growing (watch out, Taylor Swift)!

Artist and CoColor creator Rosy Lamb wants to inspire people— of any age and skill level—to enjoy a more intuitive experience of color.
-
“People tend to see colors as separate things—some we like and others we don’t—rather than as a spectrum of related hues that come together to make up everything we see,” Rosy tells us. Her new museum tour is grounded in the idea that seeing and creating color are natural abilities we all have.
Learn more about Rosy's new artist-led activity-based tour at our blog.

A new family tour is on the cutting edge of an old-fashioned approach to art: looking closely.
