Grapevines enter the flowering phase, a nerve-wracking period for growers, since the tiniest disruptions (such as rain) to the delicate flowers can mean a sad vintage...

If you were here, you could take a walk through them with us and you would notice a very light and delicate fragrance in the air.

Vines used in wine-making are generally hermaphroditic, containing both male and female reproductive organs!

💮 Each of the flower buttons has a cap of petals to protect the reproductive organs inside. Vines contain both male and female reproductive organs, and so are capable of pollenating themselves. The conditions have to be right however for this to occur.🍇
The flower caps fall away during flowering. If it rains a lot or the temperatures are cool☔, the floral caps aren’t able to detach themselves properly, and the fecundation can’t take place, which means no fruit to harvest. That is known as "𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑟𝑒".

Want to do a little wine tasting and more ?
This is a lovely place to try some of our local wines from the Duras appellation.

Les Bertins is my local vineyard and I have spent many years enjoying their wines and conviviality. It is a small family run estate of three generations.

You will get a warm welcome here in a beautiful setting, great way to spend an evening.

Mondays from 5pm ….

📌 December 31, 1943
HOMMAGE 🙏 : 464 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators of the 8th USAAF Air Divisions left their bases in southeastern England for southwestern France. Their mission was to attack airfields used by the n***s occupying forces at Cognac-Châteaubernard, Bordeaux-Merignac, Bussac and St. Jean d'Angely.
2️⃣4️⃣ of these planes were lost due to enemy attacks and bad weather.

A B-24 Liberator of the 8th USAAF based at Wendling in Norfolk during this mission was attacked by German fighters and fell near the village of Montlieu-la-Garde in Charente Maritime. The plane exploded in mid-air and eight of the ten crew members were killed.
The commune of Montlieu-la-Garde commemorates every December 31 the memory of this sad day at the monument erected in honor of the American airmen who died during this mission.

A wreath is also laid on the grave of a civilian victim who was fatally burned by flaming gasoline spray from the plane.

Another post in our frequently asked questions series : why do village & town signs have red lines through them?

When you enter a place, there is a sign with the place name. The sign also tells you that the speed limit has changed to 50kms/hr (31 miles/hr), as there may be more pedestrians & cyclists around (although the latter are everywhere in rural France!). Further the sign lets you know that you must not overuse your horn. You can be fined for too much beeping!

Leaving a place: this time there is the famous red diagonal. So you know you’ve left the village/town and can go back to the speed limit applicable to the type of road: 80kms/hr (50mph) for a single lane country road, sometimes 90 (56mph) if specifically signed and 110 (62mph) where there is a barrier between the two directions. Plus you can use your horn again!
