Utah Beach - WW2 German defences, tanks, Liberator airplane, thought provoking memorials and sculptures ... next to sand-castles, beach balls, pony trekking, ice creams and crepes.
Lieseville-sur-Douve is a very peaceful and picturesque place, full of ancient buildings, just in land from the Normandy Landing Beaches. One place we visited was the Church - dedicated to St Martin. It has a surprising interior of bold frescoes painted by Marcel Gaillard. In 1918, Gaillard founded the artists' group: J.P.F. (Jeune Peinture Francaise), who had Auguste Renoir as their President of Honour. Gaillard moved to Lieseville, from Paris, in his later years. When searching for more information about Marcel Gaillard, this is what came up: "The painter, Marcel Gaillard (1886-1947 in Liesville), worked at the time for the English services. Perfect cover, his paintings passed beyond the demarcation line by the parish priest of the village, with on the back the information important for the future disembarkation. The resistance activity of this painter maybe just a story: none of the elders of the village who knew him confirms this."
A great cycle ride to Lieseville sur Douve yesterday, lunch at Bar l'Anguille - a very special place just by the river, followed by a hotly contested round of skimming stones.
Visited Chateau Pirou today, built in the 12th century to defend the west coast of the Cotentin, a gorgeous small castle with a moat and turrets!
Roman baths at Valognes (15 mins drive) - known as 'Alauna', in the third century this Roman town was the first stopping off point for tin imported from Cornwall. Duncan pretending to sit poolside, thankfully not following Roman tradition of taking off his toga!

The location of the house is ideal for those who don't want to spend half of their holiday in a car. It is 45 minutes from Cherbourg and is an easy drive to East and West coasts and many other places of interest. There is a supermarket and other amenities within about 5 minutes (walk not drive) of the house.
The house is well equipped and ideal for young families (or even us 'oldies') with lots of things to do if it rains. It is a home-from-home rather just a 'to-let' establishment.
There is a spacious sunterrace at the rear which is a sun trap in the afternoon and evening so we dined outside every evening except when we went to a local restaurant.
The owner was extremely pleasant and helpful and did provide lots of information and suggestions of things to do.
