Absolutely wonderful weather continued for our trip. The Lorgues mill has closed so we took our 70.6kg of olives to Cotignac and then enjoyed a lunch in Café du Cours. A first this week when we went up to Tourtour and it was warm enough to picnic outside in December. Stunning views.

I can’t help noticing the weather is considerably nicer in France. Sorry for posting!

Wonderful drone video from our sailing friend Stephen Anderson.
No wonder it is so quiet!

You win some you lose some…
After a good set of summer rentals we decided to replace the very old microwave and also the rattling fan oven with a beautiful Neff slide away door version. We realised one of the mattresses was no longer acceptable and I found a good supplier. (Otherwise it was to be foam ones from the market as sadly John Lewis no longer deliver). In other good news some amazing people called TLR connect tracked down the old phone line through the garden to the far end of the house, running a new cable in a previously unknown conduit under the road, through the cellar to the other end of the house and via the garage to the study. Orange having given up last year wired us up and we now have stable fast fibre internet with speeds of 250+ in the kitchen and 40-60 at the pool. As an added benefit no more waving phone line in the trees which meant no internet after every storm. And a nice Dutchman sorted out the house wiring so that the TVs points all work.
Then things felt apart…
Our first bout of Covid meant we had plenty of time to check out the bedroom TV. Then a storm took out the power for 9 hours and the subsequent surge took out the brand new oven. Neff say this voids the guarantee and the house insurance would have paid up but the excess is 950 euros.
On arrival we had found the automatic refilling sensor had failed and ‘comme normalement it was très veille’ so needed replacing. Meanwhile the pool overflow had flushed out all the salt and chemicals which we had to replace adding to the cost. The rain from the storm has made a decent start on flushing them through again.
So in good news we have plenty of losses to set against the rental income and I still have decent internet to research “can power surges ruin your oven”. Could be worse. Probably.

How to eat 30 plants a week.
I always like this time of year for the harvest at Les Hauts Saints. Having installed a water butt just in time for the drought to finish we have had a much more successful year. So I wondered if we could reach 30 plants grown in the garden. We manage Red Orange Yellow Green and violet plus brown so fairly multicoloured.
I have eaten Courgette, Aubergine, Melon, Leek, Red and green and orange pepper, courgette again, Walnut, Figs (the ones the renters missed), Beef tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, courgette again, grapes, kumquat, chilli and you can count fresh herbs so that’s tarragon, basil, parsley (named after a well known washing powder in France);applemint, spearmint, lemongrass, chives, bay leaves, sage, thyme, rosemary (enough to do an entire herd of sheep) verbena, coriander , marjoram and soon olives. Did I mention courgette, again (enough to feed an entire village) just how many days a week can you eat it without turning into one?
So that’s thirty there or thereabouts.
Mind you I prefer my grapes in liquid form, preferably chilled.

A new one for Alfie’s Big book of things that go. I met this monster on the way to get the bread. Then that fabulous smell by Bastide de Pres of fresh grape skins. The harvest has begun.

Only in France!
A rather english looking sky for the neighbourhood picnic. But first the postman turned up and was invited in for a drink. Then the DPD lady came to deliver a parcel and joined us and finally the UPS man arrived, by which time the road was thoroughly blocked but who cared as we were all there at our lovely new neighbours. Stephan and Adeline run Parenthese du Var, their chambres d’hôte which has been beautifully renovated. Most of the neighbours were french or parisien (almost foreign) with the Dutch and Germans being away.

Looking forward to our first guests next week.
7 weeks rented this summer, only one week left. Perhaps they think UK weather is not all it might be….

That’s breakfast sorted then.
Pain maxi céréales, pain au chocolat for Andrew. Rosé box for me! The village baker has changed hands and the patisseries are amazing. They don’t do our rustique baguette but the new maxi céréales is fantastic and I have a daily order which means I don’t have to be early. The sun has started in earnest and once again the sunrises from our bedroom are wonderful.

A promising fig harvest
I’m rather hoping our summer guests don’t like fig but after the February pruning it looks like a bumper crop so hopefully there will be plenty left by September. Somewhat surprisingly after the major olive tree haircuts in February there are masses of olive flowers (you need to zoom in). Apparently the wind and rain of the last week has helped pollination. The poppies are just starting to flower and the philadelphus smells glorious. The air is warm enough for breakfast outside and the pool is at 25 degrees-nearly there!

A successful and enjoyable fortnight of olive pruning with the added benefit of a repaired wood chipper to clear the huge ‘dechets’. Burning is not allowed because of drought and fire risk. Pictured Vincent our tutor with a tree before (on the right) and after pruning showing the gourmands (suckers) removed, the height reduced, and the centre opened up to the light. Slave labour was rewarded with a break for lunch in the sun. In the rain Lee demonstrated that some people are anatomically more suited to painting shower room ceilings than others. The oil came home BA business class and will soon be distributed. Hopefully after this year’s work the harvest will be more abundant and at a height which less exalted members of the human species are able to reach to pick.

The sound of the river at the end of the road, as I cycled past after the storm was very impressive.

More photos from the monastère and its lake. A rather pregnant white sanglier. Looks about 36 weeks to me.

Just discovered this beautiful local monastery St Michel du Var built in 1987-97. The bishopric of the French Orthodox church. Lovely spot for woodland walks and picnics near to Chateau de Berne.
