Outside Saint Martin’s church in Sare. Difficult to see on the photo but above the clock there is an inscription in Basque language that reads: “Oren guziek dute gizona kolpatzen azkenekoak du hobirat egortzen” which means: “every hour hurts a man, the last one sends him to the grave”. [happy Halloween by the way 😜).

Stormy weather yesterday in Biarritz. Here is a view of the Grande Plage, with the Casino Barrière, the Hôtel du Palais and the lighthouse.

The Casino Barrière at Biarritz was inaugurated in 1929. Its flat roofs, right angles, large rectangular openings, fluted pillars and pilasters, cornices with square corbels and geometric friezes make it an emblem of triumphant modernity and a jewel of Art Deco in the city.

Cette année, pour les Journées du Patrimoine, j’ai décidé de faire la touriste au lieu de travailler tout le week-end et je suis allée visiter le nouveau CIAP de Saint-Jean-de-Luz et Ciboure, labellisées en 2016. Le CIAP se trouve dans l’ancien couvent des Récollets construit au début du XVIIe siècle. Vivement l’ouverture définitive dans quelques mois pour tout le monde puisse profiter de ce lieu superbe et de son exposition permanente sur les deux villes et la baie!

Today we visited Espelette and after that we went to the where you can learn everything about this local mild chili (4/10 Scolville scale) and also taste many different products. Here are some photographs of dried 🌶️ and fresh ones that are soon going to be harvested.

The Grand Bayonne seen from the Petit Bayonne on the other side of the Nive River. From here you can see the market and spot the 2 19th century spires of the Cathedral.

Beautiful staircase at The Hôtel du Palais with a portrait of Empress Eugénie. The palace was originally an imperial residence built in 1855 by Napoleon III and his wife, Eugénia Maria de Montijo. The Villa Eugénie, as it was known, and its grounds were subsequently sold by the Empress in 1881 to the Banque Parisienne, which transformed the site into a hotel-casino, the "Palais-Biarritz", and then into a hotel in 1893.
A terrible fire destroyed the building on 1 February 1903. An emblematic Biarritz landmark, the Hôtel du Palais was rebuilt, extended and enhanced under the direction of two architects, Dourgnon and Niermans, who preserved the original style and layout in the shape of an E (Eugénie).

Since 1905, the hotel has welcomed an international clientele and leading figures from the worlds of politics, business and the arts.
The Hôtel du Palais is the only 5-star Palace on the French Atlantic coast.

Here is a view of the front of the Plaza Hotel in Biarritz, a stunning Art Deco style building, built by Louis-Hippolyte Boileau in 1928. During my tours of the city, you will discover many styles of architecture, Art Deco being one of my favourites… I am lucky, Biarritz was so popular in the Roaring Twenties that there is a lot of it!

[INTERVIEW] « La profession de guide conférencier est une profession réglementée. Il faut disposer d’une carte professionnelle pour pouvoir l’exercer. Or, elle a beau être réglementée, elle demeure très précaire », indique Chloé Merccion, présidente de la FNGIC : Fédération Nationale des Guides Interprètes et Conférenciers.
