It takes a very sturdy bridge indeed to survive the notoriously frequent flooding of the Garonne River. When, in the 1540s, all the bridges in Toulouse had been washed away by floods, King Francois I commissioned the incarnation of Pont Neuf that you see today on historian and artist Elyse Rivin’s VoiceMap tour of Toulouse.
“It took 88 years and the work of many engineers to build a bridge that could withstand the frequent floods,” she explains.
The secret? It was built half from stone, and is considered a royal bridge. It’s also the only bridge in Toulouse to have withstood the wrath of the Garonne for more than 400 years!
