So if canoeing or cycling around the Dordogne isn’t for you then hire a donkey. Walkers are often seen coming through the village. The donkeys are super calm and remind us of how life was originally in this medieval village.

The slowest kitchen Reno ever!!! Still lots to do but here it is so far. No mainline gas here so we are now just electric. Not great In a power cut but safer. The tiling yet to be done but the cupboards are in. Everything takes so long out here, the price you pay for a slow place of life.

August and the tourists flutter through. The weather is is as predictable as always , the only relief is in the water or within the stone walls of the house.

Always take a swimming costume with you!! We discovered this spot yesterday on a short walk from the house. We were here 2hrs without any passers by. The water was deep with little current but rather chilly.

I Am not a designer but this is my mood board for the kitchen. The 1700’s room would have been full of these raw materials and neutral tones. Don’t get me wrong it will be a small kitchen with the mod essentials but a shout out to its past is a must. The likely hood is that monks would sit in the fireplace to soak the heat after a cold day of picking walnuts.

Removing the 70’s kitchen is going to be a big job. The work itself is simple but getting a plumber, carpenter and electrician all on site at the same time is not going to be easy. The tiled mantel has gone and the beam underneath is original. Not the stone lintel I was hoping for but that would have been way too glam for what was probably originally a wine merchants property.

I was naive enough to think that replacing the fence would be simple , couple of trips to the French B and Q perhaps. Fortunately the guy we hired lives in the village and a proud craftsman. The house is currently covered in scaffolding waiting to be waterproof for the first time in a while 🤣.

Missing this view a lot. A few renovations planned for this year include a new roof and kitchen . Getting renovations done in the Dordogne is a slow process , it’s quite acceptable here to live with a few buckets under your ceiling. 🤣

One of the best ways to explore the Dordogne and its castles is by Canoe. Whether you want a one hour trip or the whole day on the river there is a trip for you.

Most villages host an event during the summer. Last weekend was our turn. Parades, live music , bumper cars and fireworks. The village was packed with all ages till the early hours . Tonight we are off to another community event, a gourmet market.

Not short of a few castles round here but Chateau du Beynac is one of my favourites. Furnished and a great medieval kitchen pleased the whole gang from 8-80. Beynac also gives you some beautiful views of the Dordogne. 10 minute drive.

The villages of the Dordogne are known for peace and tranquillity, that is until they hold their weekly evening Marche Gourmands which I really recommend if you want to taste the best of local produce and community spirit. The food is good, wine goes without saying , French pop music goes down well after a few glasses of the aforementioned wine.
