What an amazing couple of weeks we had at Ty Elizabeth at Le Cosquer Holidays. The accommodation was superb ideal size for our family of six, Pinder and Theodore were great hosts. Colin was brilliant over in the ranch with both cooking and entertainment. Highly Recommended.

Au sécours ! Safety à la plage

It’s full on summer season and most of us are spending our holidays or weekends either at the beach or beside a pool, lake or whatever water feature we can to stay cool during this hot time.

Here are some useful words alongside some more important reminders about beach and water safety for everyone. It’s all so obvious and I know you know it already, but it doesn't hurt to refresh the memory and if it can potentially save a life… it’s worth it!

1/ BEACH SAFETY TIPS
1. Always swim in a supervised bathing zone
2. Never swim outside of supervised bathing hours, when the lifeguards are absent.
3. Always respect the flag colour indicated
4. Make sure you know the lay of the land before entering the water – blackboards with up to date information are available at the entrance of all supervised beaches.
5. Never leave children alone in the water or at the water’s edge.
6. Beware of seemingly safe pools – sand bars and shoals are extremely dangerous and at certain hours of both rising and falling tide, strong currents can carry you far out to sea.
7. Don’t be too proud – even strong swimmers and experienced surfers can get caught in the currents easily, stay near others and let someone know you’re entering the water.
8. If you feel the slightest ache, cramp or pain don’t enter the water, it will only intensify if you get into difficulty.

2/ FLAGGED BEACHES and their meanings
Safe swimming zones
BLUE Flag - supervised bathing zone between two flags
RED Flag - bathing forbidden
ORANGE / YELLOW Flag – Bathing dangerous but supervised nb: Yellow is used regularly on many parts of the Atlantic coast
GREEN Flag – supervised bathing with no particular danger

BLUE FLAG BEACHES
On a Blue Flag beach you can be assured of -
• An adequate number of lifeguards and/or lifesaving equipment
• First aid equipment available on the beach
• Management of beach users and events to prevent conflicts and accidents
• Safety measures in place to protect beach users
• A supply of drinking water

GENDARMERIE MARITIME
In addition to lifeguards being available on certain beaches there are also Police Lifeguards who patrol a third of the French coastline.

FRENCH COASTGUARD - SOCIETE NATIONALE DE SAUVETAGE EN MER
The SNSM, French Coastguard, operate to save lives at sea, to prevent risks and to bring relief as soon as possible to any person in danger.
