The Slow Cyclist Extraordinary e-biking & walking adventures for curious travellers across Europe and beyond.

The Slow Cyclist offers extraordinary cycling and walking adventures for the culturally curious. We believe that travel is worth taking time over; that a great holiday means getting under the skin of a place, meeting its people, indulging in its culture and understanding its history and customs. Having welcomed our first guests to Transylvania in 2015, we now take guests to little-known corners of eight countries across Europe and Africa.

NEW JOURNEY 🚵

So excited to be launching this today.

Our new journey that follows Portugal's remote Côa River, home to one of Europe's most fascinating rewilding projects and unspoiled historical stone villages.

This is an untouched corner of the country, a world away from bustling cities and coastal resorts. It's the ideal spot for quiet, contemplative travel. And a glass or two of a Douro red.

The mighty Danube Delta is home to hundreds of bird species and a vast variety of flora and fauna.

Slow Cyclist guide Misu is always a favourite with our guests in Transylvania, but next May and June he'll take a break from the Saxon villages, popping over to the delta and its labyrinth of channels. He's been visiting the region since he was a small child and has an encyclopedic knowledge of its wildflife.

Join him to find out why he fell in love with this special part of Romania. DM us for more details about our journey.

Alex from our HQ team recently visited Transylvania for the first time.

I love the chance to view Transylvania through fresh eyes, being reminded of why I fell in love with the place: the food, the wildflowers, friendly and passionate people, and an old-worldly charm that feels like stepping back in time.

Join us for a very special Slow Table 🍷

On Thursday 5th September, we're teaming up with The Grange in Hampshire to host a celebration of Syrian cuisine. The wonderful Imad of Imad's Syrian Kitchen will cook up a feast accompanied by The Grange's award-winning wines. And there's a chance to stay over and (slow) cycle through the vines with us the following day.

All profits will go to Action Syria, a charity that offers vital healthcare and education to Syria and beyond.

This is going to be a really special evening and we hope you'll join us. Click the link below for tickets 👇

There’s a magic in film photography that smartphones can’t compete with.

While she’s been hosting Slow Cyclists in Transylvania, Victoria has captured the enchanting landscapes and rural charm of the place, along with the team who make our journeys so special; that’s guide Iancu tending to the bikes, and Charlie and Anca in their welcoming home in Saschiz. Why do we use e-bikes? ⚡🚴

In 2022 we switched to e-bikes as our default. For years we'd seen some guests remain adamant about riding regular bikes, but they'd always return saying they liked the look of their travelling companions' e-bikes.

So we made the switch and haven't looked back.

If you're travelling in a private group you can choose between e-bike or regular, but all our Scheduled Journeys are on e-bikes. They're about so much more than the challenge of scaling the next peak, so whether you barely use the power or 'turbo' all the way, an e-bike takes the pressure off and means you can focus on soaking up the sights and sounds along the way.

The Slow Cyclist Story

We take small groups of curious travellers on extraordinary bicycle journeys because we believe travel is worth taking time over; that a great holiday means getting under the skin of a place by delving into its cuisine, history, customs and, of course, getting to know its people.

In 2019 our founder Oli Broom was recognised by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the world’s top travel specialists. But The Slow Cyclist journey began a decade earlier when, dissatisfied with a steady career in London, Oli quit his job, jumped on a bike and cycled to Australia to watch The Ashes cricket series between England and Australia. It took him 412 days which means that, by any definition, he is a bona fide slow cyclist. A book followed. Cycling to the Ashes: A Cricketing Odyssey from London to Brisbane was published July 2013, while Oli was living and working in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, leading a charity project to build an unlikely but much-needed home for cricket in the country. He lived there for two years, at weekends exploring all corners of the country by bike, and returned home in 2013 intent on taking others to experience Rwanda, and other beautiful parts of the world, by bicycle. The Slow Cyclist is the result and our mission is always to go the extra mile to give our guests incredible slow travel experiences with impeccable service at their core.
