Rhydyfen - a quiet, well appointed, 2 bedroom holiday cottage with a private garden & covered hot tub area in the centre of Aberaeron, set back from the noise of the main road, bars and restaurants yet still just a 60 second flat, kerbless stroll to town. We are husband and wife team, Paul and Rhian, and we hope you love Rhydyfen (pronounced ‘reed-a-venn’), Aberaeron and Cardigan Bay as much as we
do. Alternatively, if you’d like to hear our back story, put the kettle on and help yourself to something from the welcome basket…
Aberaeron and Cardigan Bay are breath-takingly beautiful, culturally rich and relatively untouched, which is why we decided to move back here to start our family. One morning in the summer of 2021, we’d seen Rhydyfen online and had decided to walk down Darkgate Street to secretly investigate. As we approached the house, a gentleman came out to ask if we were here for a viewing, and in the ensuing confusion, we realised that his face was familiar. It turns out that he was a friend of Rhian’s dad and knew the family well. He had moved away years ago, but had returned to Aberaeron to sell his mum’s house. As far as Rhian was concerned, destiny was sending us a message…
Being a true Cardi, (which in kinder terms, means a native of Cardiganshire, but perhaps more honestly, means someone who watches the pennies), Rhian’s ears pricked at the possibility of some friendly haggling… she decided that our purchase of the property was now, most definitely, written in the stars. We bought the cottage a few days later, in the summer of 2021, and renovations began. We wanted to make the suntrap of a garden a sociable and usable space, so that families, couples or friends could come and enjoy themselves, fire up the pizza oven or get cooking on the barbeque (gas or charcoal – your call). There are herbs aplenty in the garden, but if you’d rather sit back and relax, you can enjoy the sunset and the cherry trees and watch our friendly little robin call in for a titbit. A hot tub also rated highly on our checklist, so Rhian used the need for privacy as an excuse to indulge her love of plants. We envisaged enjoying an early evening (or afternoon!) aperitif in the tub, then turning on the festoon lighting to partake in some midsummer night’s dreams…
Indoors, we have tried to make it a home-from-home, so that whatever the weather or time of year, you are able to spend quality time with your loved ones. The kitchen breakfast bar (and top end of the garden) benefits from morning sunshine, but also allows for an alternative to the dining table (or some peace and quiet from the children!). Either way, we have hopefully provided the facilities you need to cook up a feast! Or you could just stroll along the quay with some fish and chips and enjoy a drink on the harbour wall…
It is an old property so please take note: mind your head on the stairs! We hope you enjoy staying here and would love for you to begin your own journey at Rhydyfen. Paul, Rhian, Mydr and Mabli.
