Get local: Experience Stilt fishing on Sri Lankan coast 🌴🌞 What a great balancing act!

Stilt fishing is one of the most iconic and picturesque scenes you'll witness along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This unique method of fishing involves fishermen perching on a crossbar, called a "petta," tied to a vertical pole planted into the coral reef. This traditional practice is over a century old and is most commonly seen in the shallow waters near towns like Weligama, Ahangama, and Koggala.

The fishermen climb onto their stilts before dawn or during sunset and sit for hours, holding a fishing rod, and waiting patiently for their catch. The stilt poles are typically passed down through generations, and each is carefully maintained by the fisherman who uses it. The sight of stilt fishermen silhouetted against the horizon as the sun sets or rises is a serene and almost meditative tableau, capturing the essence of simplicity and harmony with nature.
