Tretower Court And Castle

Just a short drive from Abergavenny is the historic Tretower Court and Castle. So striking was the massive circular tower built by Roger Picard II that his castle became known as Tretower – or ‘the place of the tower’.

Over two centuries, from about 1100, the Picards transformed themselves from invading Norman adventurers to powerful Welsh lords.

So this monumental tower with four storeys and stone walls nine feet thick wasn’t merely for protection. It was social climbing made visible, an open imitation of the castles at Pembroke and Skenfrith.

It would be remarkable enough on its own. But Tretower is two wonders in one. Just across the castle green lies an entire medieval court that became a byword for magnificence.

Today, you’ll find the great hall laid out just as it might have been for a lavish feast in the 1460s. In the recreated 15th century garden you can stroll among fragrant white roses that symbolise Sir Roger’s passionate Yorkist sympathies.

Saint Mary the Virgin

Built in 1762, on an ancient site of worship and pilgrimage, St Mary’s is reached by a remote country road, where the trees meet at the top forming a verdant tunnel. The church is sweet and small, and looks for all the world like a house; the giveaway being the lopsided bellcote.

Like so many Welsh churches it is made special by its place in the landscape; Capel y Ffin translates at chapel at the border. What was in the minds of those who founded it on this spot? Tiny St Mary’s is the chapel of ease for the church at nearby Lanigon, with room for just 20 or so worshippers. Inside is a simple, small chamber with a stone floor, wooden seating, a two sided gallery, and a pulpit dating from 1780.

The Monmouthshire Golf Club ⛳️

The physical characteristics of the golf course were determined by glacial action thousands of years ago which hollowed out the face of the Blorenge Mountain, steepened the sides of the valley and deposited mounds of fertile and free-draining sands and gravels which gave shape and variety to most of the course.

The club house stands on or close to the site of Beilu Du mansion, once one of the principal houses of the country. Here Gwarun Ap Caradwg lived until he was treacherously murdered by William De Braose in Abergavenny Castle, December 1175.

Today, there can be few more attractive Golf Courses. From almost every point there are outstanding views of wooded countryside and surrounding hills.

Boasting 18 holes, a warm welcome awaits all levels of golfer at The Monmouthshire Golf Club.

With sloping lawns, a variety of exotic plants and specimen trees there are plenty of places to sit and relax.

Linda Vista House was built as a private home in 1875. It's owner, Henry Jenkins, was born in Abergavenny and subsequently made his fortune in the construction industry in Chile. Returning to his hometown, he built his villa and laid out the gardens, which lay mainly to the south of the house. In 1957, the gardens came into public ownership. They were subsequently extended, including land at Castle Meadows and an extensive replating was undertaken.

Skenfrith Castle

Located a short drive from Abergavenny, Skenfrith Castle is one of the ‘Three Castles of Gwent’ (along with Grosmont and White Castle) founded by Norman lord William fitz Osbern in the early 12th century, the remains of Skenfrith we see today are of a later fortress constructed in the 13th century by Hubert de Burgh. The castle’s well-preserved walls surround a circular keep, similar to those seen at Bronllys and Tretower. Built on an earthen mound, this sturdy structure was a last line of defence should the castle fall under attack.

Between them, the Three Castles controlled a large area of confrontational border country between the River Wye and the Black Mountains, with Skenfrith occupying a strategic spot on the banks of the River Monnow overlooking one of the main routes between Wales and England.

Bethany Baptist Chapel is a handsome gothic urban chapel designed by the local architect E. A. Johnson of Abergavenny, who designed much of the late nineteenth-century Abergavenny. Unusually for a chapel his name and that of the Abergavenny builder, J.G. Thomas, both appear on the foundation stone, perhaps reflecting Johnson's high status and aspirations in the town. A chapel had been first built by this congregation or cause in 1828 but the present building dates from 1882.

Today The Chapel hosts regular events and workshops as well as a fabulous menu in the café revolving around seasonal fresh produce from local markets.

Abergavenny Three Peaks - Saturday 29th March

The Three Peaks Trial is an organised challenge walk arranged each year in March by the Cardiff Outdoor Group.

The Walk was first held in March 1963 and was designed for less experienced walkers who wanted to test their powers of endurance and skill at map reading. It is now the oldest challenge walk in the UK.

Over the years the event has been modified so in 2025 there is a choice of four other routes.
