𝗜𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 2021, 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲.

The designation recognises the important contribution Wales made to the Industrial Revolution.

Included within the designated landscape are Ogwen Valley, Nantlle Valley, Dinorwig, Cwm Pennant, Ffestiniog and Abergynolwyn. The slate culture is deeply rooted in north Wales, so it’s definitely worth visiting the National Slate Museum in Llanberis to know more about the rich history in this part of the world! 🌄

At Zip World Llechwedd, you can do just that! With a series of huge trampolines inside a vast underground chamber, you can bounce to your heart's content. It’s called Bounce Below. Three trampolines, one above the other, in a space that’s like an alien cathedral, all connected with slides and ladders, and lit by psychedelic, multi-coloured lights.

It might sound as unfathomable as finding out your long-lost father is actually Darth Vader, but, believe it or not, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀.

The Millennium Falcon, the iconic star ship piloted by Han Solo in the Star Wars universe, was built in a dockyard in Pembrokeshire in West Wales. Well, at least the life-size film prop was.

Now a new permanent exhibition in the town tells the story of the ambitious build, dubbed ‘the worst-kept secret in Pembroke Dock’, featuring photographs, video footage and first-hand accounts delving into the history of the tight-lipped project that has written Wales into the Star Wars legacy 🌌

𝗔𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, the Rheidol Railway are not only a fantastic, traditional foray into Wales' history, but they are doing loads to protect it too! 🚞

Since opening in 1902, millions have enjoyed the scenic trip through the ancient woodlands to Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous waterfalls nestled in the beautiful Cambrian Mountains. Why not make yourself one of them? The views of the Cambrian in autumn are truly a sight to behold!

For this week's , we were treated to an awesome photo of some surfers heading our to brave the waves at Morfa Bychan (known locally as Black Rock Sands) near Porthmadog!

This long beach has fairly flat water in light winds and is ideal for beginners during these conditions. However, there is a slight rip tide present here and when the wind picks up, so does the swell. In stronger winds with big waves, this location is excellent for more experienced wave sailors. 𝗦𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀! 🏄

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝘆𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 and has been an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for over 40 years. Tucked away on the border between Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, it’s a wonderful place to visit in any season! Though autumn is when it truly begins to shine! 🍂

But, there’s more to this region than good looks. The Wye is the first river in the UK to be designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) along its entire length, from its source on the slopes of the Plynlimon in Powys to its mouth at Chepstow. It’s also a European Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Its lush, leafy valley is the perfect place for walking, cycling, horse riding, rock climbing, caving, canoeing and kayaking!

In Pembrokeshire, the unspoilt coastline provides some of the best places in the UK to spot grey seals, with over 5,000 Atlantic grey seal pups born from September to December every year!

The waters off the Pembrokeshire coast are also protected, giving walkers the chance to spot basking sharks, blue whales, turtles and Risso dolphins! 🐬

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟳𝟬𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 and which support numerous interesting lichens and insects.

Already a SSSI, Dinefwr was designated as a National Nature Reserve in 2007, and it is the only area of parkland to receive such a designation in Wales!

Visit in autumn to gaze at all the wonderful fungi and fiery leaves upon the trees! Or, if you're feeling in the Halloween spirit why not attend one of their "Spooky After Dark" events? 👻

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻! 𝗢𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗰𝗮𝘄𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻! 🐑

Cawl (also known as ‘lobscows’ in areas of North Wales) is a hearty stew made of meat and any vegetables available. There are many recipes often handed down through the family and vary from town to town throughout Wales. It is often better the day after preparing when all the flavours have developed, and served in some areas in a wooden bowl and eaten with a wooden spoon with chunks of homemade bread and Welsh cheese! 🧀

So, using the recipe below, why not try it out for yourself?

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
1kg middle neck or shoulder Welsh lamb, Welsh beef or ham hock
1 onion - roughly chopped
6 medium potatoes – peeled and chopped
3 carrots – peeled and chopped
1 small swede or 2 parsnips – peeled and chopped
2 leeks – washed and sliced
1 small bunch fresh parsley
Vegetable stock
Salt and pepper to taste

𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱
𝟬𝟭. Place the meat in a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 2-3 hours over a low heat. Leave overnight to cool and the following day skim off any fat that has risen to the surface.

𝟬𝟮. Cut the meat off the bone and return to the stock then add the potatoes, carrots, swede or parsnips and simmer until cooked. Add more vegetable stock if required at this point. Season with salt and pepper.

𝟬𝟯. Finally add the shredded leeks and just before serving throw in the roughly chopped parsley. You can thicken the cawl if required with a paste made with flour and water or fine oatmeal.

𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲: It is better to use a cheaper cut of meat on the bone so that maximum flavour is obtained! For a non-meat option, why not try adding Butter Beans, Kidney Beans or Mixed Beans?

Serious ghost-hunters can test their stamina at one of the castle’s regular overnight paranormal investigation events, where scientific tests and spiritual experiments are carried out throughout the night with the use of investigatory equipment. If the ghoulish activity becomes thirsty work, the castle’s Cross Bar offers warming spirits of a different kind!

There’s a popular proverb in Wales: 'Dod yn ol at fy nghoed'. The phrase, which means to return to a positive state of mind, translates literally into English as ‘to come back to my trees’, emphasising how nature has long been valued in Wales as essential to wellbeing.

The National Forest is a programme to create a network of woodlands that runs the entire length and breadth of Wales, sweeping around the country . This great green corridor would build upon, and protect, areas of existing ancient woodland in Wales, as well as creating new forest areas; ultimately meaning that, one day, humans and animals will be able to walk across Wales without leaving the woods!

Stretching 2,295 feet (700m) over the sea, Llandudno Pier is the longest in Wales, and one of the UK’s finest, and was voted "Pier of the Year 2005" by the members of the National Piers Society.

This outstanding iron pier was built in two phases - the straight section (from the gate near Happy Valley) was opened to the public on 1 August 1877. The spur, which now gives Llandudno Pier its main entrance from the promenade was added in 1884.

𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗟𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗴. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗿𝘆𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹.

The nearby Urdd Centre has a dry ski slope, horse-riding and go-karts if you want a more adventurous family day out. Wildlife spotters will love looking out for the Cardigan Bay dolphins and porpoises. You can often see them from the beach or for a memorable day out try a boat trip into the bay.

History fans will enjoy Castell Henllys, a group of Iron Age roundhouses that have been rebuilt on the foundations of a hill fort. The dog friendly beach at Poppit Sands has plenty of room to let off steam, lots of rockpools and tearooms too! ⛱️

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱! 🐕

Beddgelert means 'Gelert's grave' and you can take an easy stroll along the river to find the grave. Gelert wasn't a person though. He was a faithful hound. Left to watch over a baby, fearless Gelert fought off and killed a huge wolf, getting covered in blood in the process. His master Llewelyn returned and seeing his baby son no longer where he'd left him and the dog covered in blood, assumed Gelert had killed him.

Overcome with grief Llewelyn killed the dog only to find the lifeless co**se of the wolf and the baby alive and well nearby. Filled with remorse Llewelyn buried Gelert here. Gelert's grave is marked by a tree with flowers at its base. A little further stands a sculpture of the brave dog.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

Yes it's a feast for the eyes, abundant in wildlife and rare flora and fauna, but it also has numerous monuments and sites of historic interest. There's never a dull moment here.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟴 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🕑
In the early 19th century, Robert Owen raised the demand for a ten-hour day in 1810, and instituted it in his "socialist" enterprise at New Lanark. By 1817 he had formulated the goal of the eight-hour day and coined the slogan: "Eight hours' labour, Eight hours' recreation, Eight hours' rest".

𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗹-𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 🚚
Did you know that without Wales there would be no Amazon? Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones was a Welsh entrepreneur who formed the first mail order business, revolutionising how products were sold. Creating the first mail-order catalogues in 1861, for the first time customers could order by post, and the goods were delivered by railway. The BBC summed up his legacy as "The mail-order pioneer who started a billion-pound industry".

𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 🌌
Isaac Roberts FRS was a Welsh engineer and businessman best known for his work as an amateur astronomer, pioneering the field of astrophotography of nebulae.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗡𝗛𝗦) 🌈
Welshman Aneurin Bevan, founded the National Health Service in 1948 whilst serving as minister for health. Bevan was inspired by a system used by local miners and steel workers who paid weekly subscriptions to be covered for medical and hospital expenses.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. This is a place full of Iron and Bronze Age hillforts, with landmarks such as Pen Dinas on the edge of Aberystwyth. At the top of the hill are the remains of a fort dating back to around 400BC. Take in the panoramic views over the Ceredigion coast from this lofty vantage point and it’s clear why the fort’s former inhabitants chose to build here.

You’ll also find dozens of forts among the hills of the Bannau Brycheiniog - Brecon Beacons - National Park. Make the climb up to the Iron Age Pen-y-Crug or Brecon Gaer Roman Fort, both near Brecon, to peer back into our ancient history 🏰

Although the coast here doesn’t do funfairs, it does excel in perfect coves, unspoilt views and majestic wildlife! Perfect for a truly authentic, Welsh holiday! 🐬

The first thing most people see when they approach Aberaeron are the charming, colourful houses adorning the town. It's a true place to relax - mooching around the harbour, exploring the independent shops and craft centres and enjoying a homemade cake and paned or even an ice cream! 🍦

The town is right on the Wales Coast Path and The Coastal Way, so a perfect stop off point during a leisurely walk.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗲, 𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗳, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. The Afanc was said to attack and devour anyone who entered its waters!

Legend has it that King Arthur slayed the monster. Near Llyn Barfog is a rock with a hoof print carved into it, along with the words Carn March Arthur (stone of Arthur's horse), supposedly made when his steed, Llamrai, dragged the Afanc from the deep!

Why not take a walk and see, but stay away from the water. You never know what might be still lurking there! 🐊

𝗔 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗵 𝘃𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲, 𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗯𝘀. Follow this simple step by step recipe to create your own delicious Glamorgan sausages!

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
225g fresh breadcrumbs
125g grated cheese
3 medium size free-range eggs
a little milk
salt and white pepper
1⁄2 teaspoon dry mustard
175g leek shredded and sautéed in a little butter for 2 minutes
1 heaped tablespoon of fresh, chopped parsley

𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
100g fresh breadcrumbs
1 medium size free-range egg
4 tablespoons milk
Vegetable oil for frying

𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱
1. Place the breadcrumbs, cheese, seasoning, mustard, leek and parsley into a mixing bowl, mix well.

2. Beat together the eggs, and add to the ingredients. Mix the ingredients to form a firm dough, you may need a little milk if the mixture is a little dry. Divide the mixture into 16, and form each portion into a sausage shape.

3. Coating the sausages is optional, however this does give a wonderful crispy texture to the sausages. Beat the egg and add the milk. Place the breadcrumbs on a plate and season lightly. Take each sausage and roll it in the egg mixture, drain a little, then roll in the breadcrumbs. Repeat until all the sausages are coated, chill for an hour.

4. Heat a heavy base frying pan, add a little oil, add the sausages a few at a time and cook over a medium-low heat until golden all over. The sausages should fry gently, if the heat is too high they will brown too quickly and not be cooked through.

For a vegan alternative, check out the link to the recipe below. Although Glamorgan sausages traditionally use Caerphilly Cheese, you can swap out elements as you wish! Why not try a Mediterranean twist with chopped red onion, chopped olives, small capers, and chopped sun-dried tomatoes?
