We had a great trip out this morning in very calm conditions and the sun was warming after the first frost of the autumn overnight. The reflections on the loch were stunning and the colours are lovely at the moment.
There were a few Eagles around but they were all flying in the distance above the hills. At one point we noticed around 20 birds all heading in the same direction and it turned out they were mobbing the Eagles. A couple of porpoises were spotted and the seals were mainly swimming today as the water is currently warmer than being ashore. There were plenty of deer on the ridges of the hills today, where they've headed for the annual rutting season. It's been quite noisy around here in the early mornings as the Stags roar!
We'll continue heading out on the trips until there is insufficient demand so if you'd like to join us, just get in touch as you arrive or just before and we'll see what we can do. Hope to see you soon.

What amazing weather we've been having over the last few days! The sun has been lovely and warm with a welcome bit of breeze at times to cool us down. The scenery has been stunning with the blue skies above the rugged landscape. Today we found 3 of the White-Tailed Eagles but unfortunately the position of the sun made photography challenging. We've had quite an influx of fish into the loch recently which has meant many porpoise sightings. The seals and their pups are loving basking in the sunshine and heading into the water for a cooling swim.

Lets hope this decent weather continues!

The White-Tailed Eagles were busy looking for food yesterday. They seemed to have their beady eyes on something in the distance when they were together on a branch. We thought we'd identified an Otter close by, which was busy fishing and suddenly both birds took off and landed on the shoreline nearby - they must have spotted the Otter too and though it might have a tasty morsel. Luckily for the Otter they gave up and headed back to the tree!

The weather has been unseasonably challenging since the beginning of August meaning that the few boat trips which we've managed to do have been organised at the last minute when a small weather opportunity has been found! This morning we took a group out who were staying in Salen so we were able to set off early to get out before the wind made the loch uncomfortable again. The weather was mostly fine with a few sunny spells although we did have a couple of showers later on.
Below are a few photos taken this morning. I was somewhat surprised to find a photo of a seal actually out of the water! The rainbow was unusual in that it stretched across the whole loch and was nearly flat rather than it's usual shape. Finally the sky was very black above us as a shower came over but provided this spectacular view looking back up the loch as we approached Salen on our return.
We're both very hopeful that the weather will improve soon!

It was a lovely trip out today with it being much warmer than of recent times and in the latter part we were bathed in sunshine.
We were treated to both pairs of White-Tailed Eagles, in different places but each sharing the same tree with their partner. We also found this seal having a relaxing rest on a rock which was just submerged.
It's certainly looking much warmer for the next few days so we're looking forward to some more sunshine!

On yesterdays trip we were bathed in sunshine and Loch Sunart looked at it's best. The loch is very scenic with a mix of forestry, and the rugged hills, which look stunning with blue skies behind them. Beinn Resipol dominates the scenery for a considerable part of the trip and is the most western of Scotland's large peaks. At 845m it just misses out on being a Munro (914m) and is classed as a Corbett.
A few photos of the scenery and some of the wildlife we saw are below.

The wildlife has been busy on Loch Sunart over the last few weeks as they are now rearing their young. Many are now appearing out and about on the loch with the young Grey Herons on the shoreline, a flock of Eider Ducks hunting for mussels at the Mussel Farm, and lots of Greylag Geese swimming around. The seals have had their pups and the mums are busy keeping a watchful eye on them. The White-Tailed Eagles are often seen sitting in the trees.

Yesterday we came across this brigantine tallship called Florette (see photo below) anchored just off the island of Carna. The captain and crew are the ships owners and you can book your own sailing adventure onboard. It was launched in 1921 and is believed to be the last original wooden brigantine still in use. It was certainly an interesting sight on the loch!

Yesterdays trip was a bit warmer than it's been for a while with the wind changing to South-East from the Northerlies which we've seen a lot this year.

There was plenty of wildlife around with the Common Seals now pupping and we spotted a few pups with their mums sheltering from the wind. Two of the White-Tailed Eagles were sat together in a tree, so we were able to get some photos. Sadly I wasn't ready with my camera when they decided to fly but some of the guests onboard managed to get some great photos!
The rain stayed away and the sun did try to get out a couple of times but didn't quite get there. As we arrived back, the wind was building so we promptly got Mingary safe on her sheltered berth on the pontoon, while we await the wind dropping.

Here's a few photos from the trip.

We had another great trip today with better weather than expected and very warm when the sun made an appearance. I'd gone back to extra jumpers, expecting it to be cold, but ended up shedding my jacket half way through!
We had a couple of sightings of White-Tailed Eagles and were quite surprised to find one of them sharing it's tree with a Hooded Crow! The scenery was stunning today and it was lovely to see a few yachts under sail heading up the loch.
Here's a selection of the photos taken today.

We often get asked if we see Otters in the bay and we do see them quite often, mainly on the rock in front of our house eating their catch. Last night we got a good video at dusk, of an otter fishing in a rockpool just in front of the house. If you watch the video to the end you can see where it was in relation to the jetty. There were actually 2 otters playing for ages, but by the time I got the camera out, the other had disappeared.

We had a brilliant trip out today with the last remaining seagoing Paddle Steamer the Waverley, heading up Loch Sunart to Salen, coinciding with our boat trip this afternoon. We saw her twice, both heading up the loch and again on her return trip to Tobermory. It was an impressive sight and our guests were very excited that they had the opportunity to see her at relatively close quarters.
The White-Tailed Eagles were also prominent today and we had 3 separate sightings of them (4 eagles in total) with the final pair taking off in flight as we watched.

This week has been our busiest yet since starting the trips nearly 2 years ago and we'd like to thank everyone who has been out with us. The weather has been great recently and has been showing Loch Sunart at it's best.
The wildlife sightings have been busy this week, with the Grey Herons sitting on their nests, the Common Terns returning last week, together with Greylags, Guillemots, Canada Geese and numerous Red Deer along with a few Porpoises. The stars of this week have been the White-Tailed Eagles who have been pretty determined to raid the other birds nests and we have seen them being mobbed by the Seagulls three times. They've done some amazing fly pasts which has enabled our guests to see the sheer size of them. While we were all looking for the Eagles earlier in the week, one of our guests was looking in the opposite direction and spotted a young stag swimming in the loch. We know that they do swim out to the islands but have never seen one on a trip before!
Here's a selection of photos from recent trips - let's hope the good weather continues.

Well, that was some trip this afternoon! A white-tailed eagle very conveniently suddenly took off, fairly close to us and landed next to their partner on a rock. While they quietly sat on the rock, we slowly headed past and suddenly there was also a Golden Eagle also circling overhead. Once the photo opportunities were taken, we headed down towards the entrance to the loch, where there were a few seals. On our way back we headed through the Risga narrows and just as we left the narrows, there was an otter sat on a nearly submerged rock, very close to the boat. I took a hasty photo but it then disappeared back into the water. This is only the second time, that we have seen an otter while out on the trips so we were very lucky. Heading back up the loch, we spied another White-Tailed Eagle sat on top of its favoured tree. It was a bit of a distance away, but everyone onboard managed to see it through binoculars. An exciting afternoon was had by all onboard and with the weather behaving, although a bit cold at times, we had a great time.

Our charter boat Mingary has been back in the water for a few weeks and good weather over Easter meant an early start. Unfortunately there were then constant strong winds for a couple of weeks which curtailed our activities. We're now back to a settled period of weather and on our trip on Friday, we were bathed in sunshine and the scenery on Loch Sunart looked at its best. The wildlife is starting to re-appear and there looks to have been some nesting activity. Here's a selection of photos from our recent trips, with thanks to Mike Goodman from Strontian, who sent us a few from the trip he was on last week.
