Visits from Aldeburgh Montessori Nursery and Aldeburgh Primary School have bought so much Christmas joy to our residents.
Happy Easter from all at Garrett House!
Our beautiful Bessie turned 103 years young this week. Bessie keeps youthful by joining in as many activities as possible, especially enjoying gardening and armchair exercises. She can be found early most mornings doing a circuit of the corridors to keep herself fit. Our chefs were pleased to present Bessie and her family with a celebratory buffet and a visit from The Mayor of Aldeburgh really topped off her day. Bessie is a joy to be with and an inspiration to us all.
At 102 years young, Mrs Bessie Poulson is always happy to join in and have fun whether it be armchair exercises, painting, gardening, afternoon tea in the garden or simply dancing with Elvis. Bessie is always cheerful and is an inspiration to us all.
"Milton" often pops by on a Saturday morning to brighten up our day!
Remembrance Sunday is an important and solemn occasion, especially for the elderly so it was with trepidation that we decided to end the TV coverage with live entertainment.
It proved to be the right decision and Brian Shaw engaged our residents from the moment he entered the room. He entertained with songs from the wartime era plus a few cockney classics. They were still singing and swaying on their zimmer frames when they went into lunch.
It was such fun and there is very little quite as heart-warming as a room full of elderly people clearly enjoying themselves.

A day in the life of an Activity Co-ordinator

Weatherwise, it's started to turn a bit miserable outside so we've turned our attention to more indoor pursuits. Pom pom making was the order of the day and as you can see, the concentration was palpable but this is also a very good exercise for keeping fingers supple. It was much enjoyed, especially by our own Rudy.
We have reached that time of the year to start taking cuttings and our Gardening Club have been busy with Geraniums. Fingers crossed that we increase our stock for an even bigger show next year. Either way, as you can see, our residents enjoy the challenge and making the most of the lovely weather.
Pianist, Nick Raison, is one of our most popular and regular entertainers at Garrett House. A highly experienced solo performer and accompanist, Nick's repertoire is mainly from 'The Great American Songbook' era from the 1920's but he also has a huge variety of tunes which can be played and two favourites that our residents often request and love to sing to are' Daisy Daisy' and 'Over The Rainbow". Nick has a delightful rapport with our residents and when they see any chairs being moved, they immediately ask if it's to make room for the lovely Mr Raison's piano.
Weekly Flower Club with Barbara Brown is always a fun morning. We firstly gather blooms and foliage from our gardens and depending on the season, add freshly bought in flowers. We are then ready to make up arrangements to brighten our dining room tables.
Elvis was 'in the building' recently for our 1950's day. Both staff and residents dressed for the occasion and Garrett House was decorated with memorabilia from the era. Residents enjoyed Coronation Chicken and Spam fritters for lunch whilst the Babycham was on ice ready for Elvis' performance. It was a wonderful day and has generated much discussion for everyone in the days following. A small selection of the photos are shown below.
Although it now seems like a distant memory, much fun was had by all at the Garrett House Christmas Party. We were joined by many family and friends and the choir of Aldeburgh Baptist Church. The afternoon was concluded with a rousing rendition of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' which caused much laughter and is sure to become a house tradition. This was followed by a delicious buffet homemade in our kitchens by Kevin.
Garrett House on Tour!
This week a group of residents, staff and volunteers boarded the C.A.T.S. bus and headed to Southwold Pier. A cream tea followed by a walk along the Pier was enjoyed by all on what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. On reboarding the bus for the trip home, much of the discussion was about when and where our next trip might be. Well, we will need to return quite soon as after all those scones, we never had room for ice cream!!
