🌟 Meet Katie Griffin, finding independence and purpose in the traffic management industry 🚧. 🚗 Katie joined HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd two years ago. Leaving behind McDonald's and the care industry, Katie found her passion in the dynamic world of traffic management.

🛣️ Starting in the yard making signs, Katie quickly learned the ropes and graduated to a full operative in 2022. She recently worked dayshifts on the A11 Concrete Roads Framework but plans to return to night shifts for the valuable experience of handling quieter traffic and mastering skills like lane closures.

💪 Overcoming initial doubts about her physical abilities, Katie emphasizes the importance of technique over strength. She's shattered stereotypes, proving that the job isn't limited by gender. However, she acknowledges a unique aspect—when people realize she's a female operative, their attitudes change instantly, becoming more patient and respectful.

🏠 Balancing work and home life, Katie shares her secret to managing long shifts. She enjoys the independence and diversity of her work, finding support and a sense of family at the Peterborough depot. Katie's passion for her job shines through, making it clear that she's found her calling.

👏 Let's celebrate Katie's journey, breaking barriers and thriving in an industry she loves! 💼 Read more here: https://www.hwmartin.com/news/katie-griffin-breaking-stereotypes-on-the-a11-as-a-dedicated-traffic-management-operative/

We're halfway through our week celebrating and today we're delighted to introduce you to Design and Build UK Women in Construction On The Tools Award shortlister, Sammy Peters.

Read all about her journey here: https://www.hwmartin.com/news/empowering-the-roadways-samantha-peters-journey-in-traffic-management/

At the age of 21, Sammy swapped horses 🏇 for IPVs, seeking better opportunities and independence in the world of temporary traffic management 🚦,.

Despite the occasional inconvenience of 'mansplaining', Sammy's calm self-assurance propels her forward, earning her great respect in this male-dominated field. Her journey with HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd has seen her evolve from a trainee to a Traffic Management Operative showcasing her leadership skills on the A5.

Customer engagement is a job highlight for Sammy. She's a pioneer in delivering exceptional customer service in traffic management, setting a precedent for her colleagues.

Looking ahead, Sammy envisions climbing the career ladder, aspiring to achieve her HGV Class C and becoming a Traffic Management Foreman. We can't wait to support her on that journey as she opens doors for future women in construction.

Sammy really does embody the 'backbone of the industry' and stands as a deserving shortlister for the Women in Construction On The Tools Award 👷‍♀️🏆.

🚦 Meet Ellie Jones: a trailblazing Traffic Management Operative challenging stereotypes! Originally from London, she joined HW Martin (Traffic Management) Ltd in 2021. Ellie believes lack of awareness and misguided attitudes hinder more females from entering the industry. She urges everyone to share opportunities in construction, transport and traffic management with girls.

👷‍♀️ Ellie loves the diversity her job offers, from the depot's camaraderie to the thrill of working on the road. She emphasizes that being a girl is no barrier – it's all about drive and determination. Ellie's practical advice for working as a Traffic Management Operative? Always carry spare socks and baby wipes!

💪 Breaking stereotypes, Ellie encourages embracing the unique work environment. In traffic management, she has found a space where she can be herself without any censorship.

🌟 Let's amplify Ellie's message: there's nothing a girl can't do in traffic management! 💼🚗

🚧 Meet Sinead Ryan, Lead Traffic Management Operative (LTMO) paving the way in a male-dominated field! 💪 Based at our Peterborough depot for the past 5 years, she became LTMO last year, leading her crew with finesse.

👷‍♀️ Sinead challenges stereotypes - when asked, "Who's in charge?" on-site, she confidently says, "Me!" 🙌 She is inspired by her sister Helen who also works for us, and firmly believes gender doesn't define capability.

🌟 Starting as a sign maker in the yard, Sinead's journey to becoming an LTMO and the variety in the job keeps her loving every moment. She credits routine with helping her balance shift work and social life. But the unique bond she shares with those in the team makes it feel less like work and more like family.

👭 Encouraging others to join the industry, Sinead pays it forward by teaching trainees and advocating for better protections for highway workers. 💬💪

Our collaboration with Carnell on the A595 Moresby Hall Improvement Scheme was a game-changer! 🛣️👏

Carnell's SafetyCam Vans made a huge impact, monitoring and deterring speeding on the diversion route, ensuring the safety of the community. 🌟 Customer feedback has been fantastic, with residents noticing a significant reduction in speeding and a safer environment. 🚦🏡

🌐 The SafetyCam Van, equipped with speed cameras and ANPR technology, played a crucial role in achieving an 86% decrease in complaints during the 10-weekend closures. 🤯👍

We’re taking a moment every day this week to celebrate and promote the incredible women who deliver temporary traffic management on Britain’s highways as part of 👷‍♀️ Women in Construction Week.

These women embody what it is to be keys to the future, playing a vital role in shaping the future of the construction industry by being role models for their colleagues and future generations, paying it forward, and doing an all-round fantastic job.

We’re going to kickstart the week by introducing Contract Manager, Helen Ryan. Helen has worked for us for 11 years, progressing from Yard Operative to Contract Manager. She is a highly motivated and well-respected mentor at the business, responsible for putting upwards of 50 people to work on the road network every night. She is an aspiring leader, carving out a space for herself in an environment that is traditionally considered to be 'male-dominated'.

Helen is an integral part of the team at our Peterborough depot, providing togetherness and unity and supporting everyone to thrive. She is known for being fiercely loyal to her team and credits them for helping her achieve what she has to date. To her, every success is intrinsically linked to teamwork and family.

She is a huge advocate of diversifying the workforce in traffic management and acts as a proactive ambassador for change. She has contributed to the development of people of all genders at the business including mentoring Peterborough's three female traffic management operatives.

We asked Helen why she joined the industry, how she has navigated the minefield that is being a career mother, the challenges she faces in her role, and how she pays forward the opportunities she has had.

🌟 Celebrating a Year of Impact in 2023! 🌍 From January to December, we delivered an impressive £47,672.00 worth of social value! 👏

Road closures for parades, equipment donations, and sponsorships for grassroots sports teams - their initiatives covered it all! A significant chunk of the social value, nearly £20,000, came through equipment donations to community events. Big shoutout to National Sign Compliance Manager, Jay Taylor, for facilitating this generosity. 🚧✨

What's truly inspiring? Company employees collectively volunteered more than 300 hours! 👥 From career advice to mentoring for marginalized groups, they're making a real difference. Senior leadership, including Operations Director Andy Graham, led by example, getting hands-on in activities like a beach clean-up in Weston-super-Mare. 🏖️

In Andy's words, "Social value is a powerful factor in winning contracts, but we want to go further because contributing to social value is the right thing to do on so many levels." 🌐

Are you ready to unleash those positive vibes? Tomorrow is day, the ultimate moment to kickstart a conversation about mental health and smash down the walls that stop people from seeking the support they need.

Feeling a bit unsure about how to dive into the discussion? No worries, we did a little digging and found some suggestions to get you started:

1. Clear your schedule: Can't chat on the spot? No problem! Set up a time you can to dive into the conversation.
2. Double up on the care: Asking twice turns a simple 'How are you?' into a genuine show of concern.
3. Go big with open-ended questions: Give them a non-judgemental space to express their feelings and thoughts in full force.
4. Set the scene: Whether it's a chilled coffee shop or a stroll in the park, or a drive in the countryside, choose a vibe that lets the conversation flow effortlessly.
5. No expert required: Remember, you're not the fixer-upper – just be there to listen and support without judgment.
6. Point them to the stars: If needed, guide them to stellar support sources like the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.
7. Query time: Dive into questions that help you understand what they've told you and make them feel truly heard.
8. Rock that positive body language: Nod and throw in some 'What happened next?' gems to keep the conversation jamming.
9. Seal the deal on confidentiality: Keep their trust locked down – no turning their story into the next big gossip.
10. Post-convo check-in: Show them you care by following up and making sure they're doing ok.

Mental health struggles or not, they're still the same awesome person. Break down the stigma barrier and treat them like the rockstar 🌟 they are, unless they've requested otherwise.

Conversations about mental health have the potential to be life-changing. Let's turn up the energy and make a real difference! 🚀💬

Our 500-strong workforce operates almost exclusively on the road network where they face risks to their safety every day, but not always from the hazards you might expect. The majority can be eliminated through stringent safety procedures, but some, based on their inherent unpredictability, are harder to plan for.

In a short video, three of our employees share details about their experiences of one such hazard, an incursion, to raise awareness of greater road safety for all.

An incursion is an intentional or unintentional unauthorised entry into temporary traffic management by the public or emergency services.

We couldn't be more proud to support this inspiring organisation alongside our supply chain partners and National Highways providing opportunities for veterans.

RBLI had the pleasure of welcoming members of National Highways' supply chain to RBLI’s village today, where they visited our social enterprise factory, Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company and met several veterans living and working in our thriving community in Aylesford.

Last year, members of National Highways' supply chain purchased £800,000 worth of road signs from Royal British Legion Industries; and during their visit today, it was announced that they would pledge £1,000,000 for this year; further supporting our Armed Forces veterans and those living with disabilities with employment producing signage at BBMC.

We’d like to thank Malcolm Dare FCIPS and all of National Highways and the members of their supply chain Chevron Traffic Management, Amey, Ringway, Colas Ltd, Eurovia, Highway Traffic Management, HW Martin Traffic Management Limited for their efforts in supporting our veterans, and we look forward to working with them throughout 2023 and beyond.
