Are you looking to see six planets to align in the sky from this evening?

Head into Northumberland National Park tonight for some of the darkest skies in the UK to watch this rare phenomenon. Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are set to align with the first four mentioned being visible by the naked eye.

Some of the best stargazing spots in the Park include:

- Stonehaugh
- Wooler Common
- Cawfields
- Harbottle
- Steel Rigg
- Falstone
- Elsdon
- Ingram

Be sure to share your photos, tag Northumberland National Park and let us know where in the Park you are.

✨ The Winter Guardian ✨

My favourite winter constellation, Orion, rising above Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland.

If you’re wondering about the pinkish hues in the sky, those are hydrogen-alpha emission nebulae - regions of space where stars are born. These nebulae emit light primarily in the infrared part of the spectrum, which is normally invisible to the human eye. However, my new astro-modified camera is four times more sensitive to this wavelength, allowing these stunning details to be captured.

GO STARGAZING: Tonight (07/01/25) offers a rare opportunity to observe the shadow of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, pass across the planet's surface. It will be tricky to see; a telescope with a high magnification eyepiece and good seeing conditions will be required. A good time to start looking for the event is 17:30 GMT, so ensure you're set up in good time! Clear skies!

Those with clear skies tonight may well be in for a treat as our first meteor shower of the year, the Quadrantids, reaches its brief but intense peak.
Named for a now extinct constellation, Quadrans Muralis, the place to look will be just off the handle of the plough any time after dark. Seeing meteors is a matter of patience, so remember to keep just looking up!
Our Astronomer Ellie has been doing the rounds on the radio to talk about the meteor shower tonight, so you can also hear all about it here (about 30 minutes in)-

January 2025 is looking to be a bumper month for stargazing!

Go Stargazing has highlighted several relatively rare events that require a telescope and are great for those lucky enough to get a new one for Christmas!
If you don't own a telescope, we have one at Star in the Countryside check our website and Go Stargazing for stargazing events, astronomy groups and observatories near you (UK), where you will be very welcome.

When and how to watch the Ursid meteor shower. If you're fascinated by the night sky a pre-Christmas treat might be on the cards this weekend with the peak of the Ursid meteor shower.
It's an annual event running over several nights but the best viewing is expected to be from Sunday evening into the early hours of Monday, according to the Royal Museums Greenwich, external. They may be visible for a few nights either side.

What is the Ursid meteor shower and how can I see it?
